Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The PowerPoint contains my voice sounding out words as well as pictures to try and engage the
students. This will help the students to hear how each word is pronounced while also seeing a picture of what
they just read.

Representation: I have chosen to represent each sentence with a picture that helps the students visualize what
sight words they are sounding out. This will hopefully instill the word in their mind so they will remember how
to pronounce it next time they come across the same sight word. The movie will also be available for them to
replay in the class incase they need to fast forward or rewind anything.

Action and Expression: The students will be asked to actively sound out each syllable when reviewing the sight
words. They will actively sound it out while I am also sounding it out over the audio of the PowerPoint movie.

Lesson idea implementation:

This PowerPoint movie will be shown to the kids during our practice of sight words. I will have a link to it in my
classroom blog as well as a hard copy of it in my class library. This allows for the students and parents to have
access to it at any point they may need it. This will encourage my kids to practice their sight words and feel
comfortable sounding out words as well as aid my ELL students while they are at home practicing the phonetics
of each word. The circles underneath each word to help the student to put their finger under the word so they

know which sight word they are sounding out.

After we have watched the PowerPoint movie in class, I will split the students up in to groups based on their
tables they are sitting at. From there, I will walk give them a list of sight words and each group will be expected
to create 4 sentences with their sight words, including pictures and graphics. Each group will have access to
class laptops as well access to the media if necessary. Once the PowerPoint is created, the PowerPoints will be
posted on the classroom blog so each student can access them in preparation for our class spelling tests.
Reflective Practice:
A way to extend this lesson beyond a PowerPoint movie would be to have the students make their own
sentences with a list of sight words. Then, they would be able to make a PowerPoint with these sentences. I
can then print the PowerPoint out and put them in our class library. This way, the students are creating
something and the rest of the students have access to it to aid in their learning of sight words.
