INTERPRETATIVE GEOTECHNICAL REPORT

ON GROUND INVESTIGATION

ZHB012,
VILLAGE WIYALA GAZANI,

TEHSIL & DISTRICT ZHOB,

BALOCHISTAN.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

M/s Engineering Design Bureau is planning to install telecommunication

towers of Telenor at various locations in Pakistan. On the instructions of
Engineering Design Bureau, a site investigation has been carried out by
Geocrust at Village Wiyala Gazani, Tehsil & District Zhob, Balochistan on
the site of proposed tower location.
The object of the investigation was to determine the ground and
groundwater conditions at the site and to provide information that would
assist the designer in the geotechnical aspects of the design of the
proposed works. The scope of the investigation was determined by the
designer.
An interpretative report has been requested, including recommendations
on the design of proposed foundations.
The site work was carried out on 18th June, 2016.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

Scope of work under this contract for geotechnical investigation consisted

of the following major tasks.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/16/01

ZHB012
1. Drilling and sampling of one (01) Borehole down to the depth of
10m or upto bed rock/boulders/gravels whichever is achieved
earlier using hand auger.

2. Performance of Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) at specified

depth intervals to test and sample the subsurface soil.

3. Performing laboratory tests to determine pertinent index and

engineering properties of the strata encountered at the site.

4. Analyze the field and laboratory data and submit an engineering

report giving recommendations for the foundation design and
construction.

3.0 THE SITE AND GEOLOGY

This area is characterized by several mountain and hill ranges.

The site is located at Village Wiyala Gazani, Tehsil & District Zhob,
Balochistan.
Further background research such as desk study was not required within
the terms of reference for the work.

4.0 PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT

It is proposed to install a telecommunication tower of Telenor at given

location.
The scope of the investigation and the analyses and interpretative
reporting thereof is based on the development proposals outlined above.
If the development proposals for the site change, then the results of the
investigation and recommendations given should be reviewed by a
Geotechnical specialist to determine whether or not further investigation
or interpretative work is necessary.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/16/01

ZHB012
5.0 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

4.1 General

Before start of drilling of boreholes it was confirmed by the

client and/or its agents, that any kind of services are not present
at the location of the boreholes.
Details of the in-situ sampling and testing carried out, together
with the description of the strata encountered are given on the
borehole logs. An explanation of the symbols and abbreviations
used on the logs, together with the method of drilling is also
given in the borehole logs.
All samples were transported to the laboratory and office of
Geocrust for examination and testing as deemed necessary by
Geocrust to fulfil their instructions and as agreed by the
designer.

4.2 Drilling of Boreholes

It is included in scope of work to drill one, 4 inches (100mm)

minimum diameter borehole using hand auger method. As site
was located at hill top so excavation of test pit was tried but due
of expose rock beds / boulders it was not possible beyond 0.3m
(1.0ft). The test pit log is given in appendix A.
Disturbed sample was taken from excavated depth in order to
identify and give a record of the strata encountered.
If SPT N values results in refusal or in excess of 50, a value of 50
was taken and recorded on logs.
Standard penetration tests (SPT) using a split spoon (S) or a solid
60o cone (C) were carried out in the cohesive and granular

deposits. The results are shown as N values on the borehole logs
at the relevant depths.
During drilling attention was given to recording any evidence of
filling. Attention was also given in recording water inflow in
order that the groundwater level beneath the site could be
established. Water levels at breaks in boring were recorded
where appropriate.
Where water was added to facilitate penetration of the soil
strata, this is noted on the field logs.

4.3 Survey

The ground levels of the site with reference with the nearest
street and/ or road were recorded with visual inspection.
Coordinates of the boreholes was recoded with the help of GPS.
A borehole layout plan was also developed and given as Fig. 2.

6.0 RESULTS OF EXPLORATORY BOREHOLES

5.1 General

Test pit logs giving details of the strata encountered are

provided in the report. A location plan of site and borehole
layout plan are also presented in the Figures.
The strata description given in the borehole logs, unless
otherwise noted, are compiled from an examination of the
disturbed samples only, together with the results of any field
and laboratory testing. Stiffness and relative density descriptions
are based on the results of the SPT and have not been amended
to take into account any overburden effects.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/16/01

ZHB012
5.2 Strata Encountered

The boreholes encountered the following general succession of

strata:
0 – 0.3 m: Gravels & Boulders, Trace Silt and is found upto
maximum depth.

5.3 Groundwater

Ground water was not encountered in any borehole.

7.0 GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY TESTING

Samples retrieved from Boreholes were examined in the field and then
transported to testing laboratory for relevant laboratory testing. The
laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples to determine the
engineering characteristics of the subsurface strata. Following laboratory
test results are presented in Appendix “B” of this report:

S. No. Type of Test No. of Tests Test Method

1. Grain Size Analysis - ASTM D 422

2. Liquid Limit - ASTM D 4318

3. Plastic Limit - ASTM D 4318

4. Moisture Content - ASTM D 2216

8.0 SELECTION OF FOUNDATION TYPE

In order to be safe, the load carrying strata must be competent to sustain

the imposed loading without undergoing shear failure, and at the same
time settlements of the foundations must not exceed the tolerable limits.
Therefore, the load carrying characteristics of the strata must be evaluated
keeping in view these two considerations.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/16/01

ZHB012
7.1 Bearing Capacity Analysis

The subsurface strata indicate that the load carrying strata

mainly consists of Silty Clay type of deposits. The bearing
capacity calculation is based on Meyerhof’s method for shear
failure and Terzaghi’s consolidation theory was used for
settlement analysis. Allowable bearing capacities for different
type of foundations at different depths are given below in the
table and shown in the figure.

S. No. Type of Footing Capacity
Depth (m)
(kPa)

For Tower Any Depth From

1 Raft 200
Foundation 2 to 3m

For Generator Strip /

2 1.0 150

9.0 SOIL EXCAVATION

At the investigated site, the excavation in soils can be made by using

conventional earth moving machinery including trenchers, scrappers,
dozers etc. Using proper execution skills almost vertical excavations can be
made for about 1.0m deep trenches. However, it is also recommended to
perform trial excavations to judge the best combination of equipment and
workability.
Slopes of temporary open-cut excavations in soil should not be steeper
than about 1 vertical on 1.5 horizontal from stability considerations. Open-
cut slopes should be protected from wind and water erosion. In case, open
cut excavations are not possible due to space restrictions, vertically cut
excavations supported by sheet piles or other properly designed support
system should be adopted.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/16/01

ZHB012
10.0 THE EARTHWORK

Prior to any construction activity, the site must be cleared of all debris and
surface vegetation. The leveling and grading can be carried out by normal
earth moving machine. It is recommended that immediately after
excavation for construction of foundation, the excavation bottoms and
slopes be cleared of all debris, proof rolled and covered by a 5cm thick
blinding concrete layer.
In order to have water erosion resistant properties, the backfill material
should consist only of inorganic material and shall have 5-20% passing the
No. 200 sieve. Fill material should pass 100% the 50 mm sieve. Besides,
that portion of material passing sieve No. 40, should not have liquid limit
more than 35 and plasticity index of not more than 12. Atterberg limits are
not required for select fill material with less than 15% passing sieve No.
200. Select fill material shall have a carbonate content of less than 25% by
weight.

11.0 PROTECTION OF CONCRETE AGAINST CORROSION

To avoid possible attack of deleterious salts on cement, we recommend to

perform chemical analysis of soil before construction to ascertain the type
of cement to be used. To minimize corrosion potential the concrete mix
should be designed using a water cement ratio not greater than 0.45.
Admixtures may be required to provide workability. Concrete shall be
densified using vibrators and a cover of 75mm should be provided over all
reinforcing steel embedded in foundations concrete. A layer of bitumen
coating should be applied to the exterior of all the foundation and other
concrete coming in contact with soil.
