ESTIMATION OF AVAILABLE CHLORINE IN BLEACHING POWDER BY

IODOMETRY

Observations and calculations

Burette: Standard solution of sodium thiosulphate

Conical Flask: 20 mL of the standard potassium dichromate aqueous

solution (0.05N) + Add 10 mL10% H2SO4 + 10 mL 10% KI (aq). After running
sodium thiosulphate aqueous solution till the color of aliquot gets lighter, add
1 mL of starch indicator.

End point: Continue the titration till the disappearance of blue violet color
followed by the appearance of transparent green color.

From the law of chemical equivalence; Na2S2O3 Ξ Cl2 Ξ CaOCl2

Available chlorine = N4 × 35.5 gm/Litre

% of available chlorine = (N4 × 35.5) × (V/1000) × (100/W) = 2.07%

Apparatus
Digital Balance, burette, pipette, conical flask, measuring flask, funnel, glass
rod, beakers. test tubes and measuring cylinder.
Reagents
Bleaching powder, potassium dichromate, sodium thiosulphate aqueous solution, 10%
potassium iodide (KI) solution, glacial acetic acid, freshly prepared 1% starch solution
indicator.
Procedure
3
Titration I - Standardization of sodium thiosulphate solution
Pipette out 20 mL of the standard potassium dichromate aqueous solution (0.05N) into
a clean 250 mL conical flask. Add 10 mL 10% H2SO4 followed by 10 mL 10% KI (aq)
into it. After running sodium thiosulphate aqueous solution till the color of aliquot gets
lighter, add 1 mL of starch indicator and continue the titration till the appearance of
transparent green color as its end point. Repeat the titration to get concordant value
(V1) of sodium thiosulphate aqueous solution consumed.
Titration II - Estimation of available chlorine
Dilute the unknown aqueous suspension of bleaching powder upto 100 mL in
measuring flask and transfer 25 mL of it (after shaking well) into a clean 250 mL conical
flask. Add 10 mL 10% KI (aq) followed by 6-7 mL glacial acetic acid into it. After
running sodium thiosulphate aqueous solution into the same conical flask till the color of
aliquot gets lighter (pale yellow), add 1 mL of starch indicator and continue the titration
till the disappearance of blue color as its end point. Repeat the titration to get
concordant value (V3) of sodium thiosulphate aqueous solution consumed.
Result
Percentage of available chlorine in the given water sample = …2.07………ppm
