Yesterday, I noticed the lovely Carolina
jasmine blooming along Highway 231 and Andrews
Avenue. It was a sign that spring is finally on its way.
However, remember there is a big possibility that we
might have a “blackberry winter” according to old
timers.
It is time for you to begin planting your garden, and
your Library has a good selection of gardening books
for you to check out. Spring officially begins on
Thursday, March 20, and flowers begin to bloom, the
grass turns green, and we can see the days getting
longer. Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour
on Sunday, March 10 as we leap forward for Daylight
Savings Time. We’ll all have a little extra time to work
in our gardens to prepare for warmer days ahead.
School closes for spring break beginning on March
26. During this time, the Library hosts special
educational programs for our children. Our Children’s
Librarian, Cheryl, always prepares interesting
programs. On March 26, we have the owls and friends
from Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary. On Wednesday,
March 27, the children will plant flowers. On
Thursday, March 28, be sure to wear an old shirt
because you will get messy with paint and slime. On
Friday, March 29, we will have Popcorn and a Movie.
The featured movie is A W rinkle in Time. Come join
us for this special week of activities. Each program
will be held in the Alice Doughtie Wing at 2:00. All
events are free of charge and this is our way of
ensuring that our children can have a safe place to go
during the holiday break. For more information, call

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

March is coming in like a lion! So much to do. First
of all, I would like to remind everyone of our Book and
Bake Sale on March 23 at 9am. Please put this on your
calendar. I will send emails and call to remind you. The
Bake Sale is very popular thanks to all of your great
goodies. So let’s get baking.
Second, we are having a lot of fun at our Book Club.
We are trying something new this time. Everyone is
going to read a different book. Join us on March 19 at
2pm and get a synopsis of some great books.
Next, the kids will have a blast during spring break
with the activities we have planned here at the Library.
Finally, don’t forget to spring forward on March 10
for Daylight Savings Time. I love the longer days!

Rosa Parks’ Dale County Connections
Everyone has heard the story of Mrs. Rosa Parks, the
civil rights pioneer who refused to give up her Montgomery
public bus seat in 1955. However, did you know she also
had connections to both Henry and Dale Counties in her
lifetime?
In April 2006, the Historic Chattahoochee Commission
and Henry County Historical Group dedicated the “Rosa
Parks Lived Here” historical marker along AL Hwy 10, west
of US Hwy 431, in Henry County. The marker briefly
summarizes her family history, including when she lived in
Henry County with her family and grandparents on a 260-
acre farm after her birth in 1913. The marker also briefly
describes when she returned to Henry County on behalf of
the NAACP to investigate the rape of a young black mother
in 1944.
About 10 years ago, the Library was given a priceless
treasure: a framed check signed by none other than Rosa L.
Parks! The check, made out to Trawick’s Funeral Home and
dated October 21, 1996, is located in the glass display case
in front of the Best Seller books. A phone call to what is
now Serenity-Trawick’s Funeral Home, led to a phone
interview with Mr. Johnny D. Trawick, the donor of the
check and a distant relative of Mrs. Parks. Mr. Trawick
excitedly revealed the fascinating story behind the check and
her connections to Dale County.
Mr. Trawick remembered Mrs. Parks visiting from
Detroit multiple times a year to visit her aunt and favorite
person in the world, Mrs. Everee Ward in Ozark. Her second
favorite person in the world just so happened to be Mr.
Trawick’s grandmother, Mamie Trawick. Since it was
unsafe for her to stay in a hotel, she stayed with either Mr.
Trawick and his parents or his grandparents. His
grandparents, Johnny L. and Mamie Trawick, founded
Trawick’s Funeral Home in 1945.
During one such visit, Mrs. Parks left a box of blank
checks with Mrs. Mamie Trawick to be used for the care of
her Aunt Everee. When she passed away on October 15,
1996, a check was written out to Trawick’s Funeral Home
for $3,900.50 to pay for her funeral expenses. However, for
reasons now forgotten, Mrs. Parks’ check was never
necessary and Mr. Johnny D. Trawick held onto the
uncashed check for several years before donating it to the
Library.
We are thankful for Mr. Johnny D. Trawick’s
thoughtfulness in sharing this memento with our Library and
community. We invite everyone to visit the Library to view
this treasure! As always, visit our Creel Richardson Local
