Objectives
1. Students will engage in call and response, focusing on mimicking and creating their own
one-note rhythms.
2. Students will dictate some of these rhythms on the board as a group.
3. Students will engage in call and response with rhythms found in​ Creature in the Attic.

Standards Addressed

EI.1 The student will echo, read, and notate music, including
1. identifying, defining, and using basic standard notation for pitch, rhythm, meter,
articulation, dynamics, and other elements of music; and
2. singing selected lines from music being studied.

EI.2 The student will echo, read, and perform simple rhythms and rhythmic patterns,
including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted half notes, dotted
quarter notes, and corresponding rests.

EI.15 The student will perform simple rhythmic and melodic examples in
call-and-response styles.

Procedure

1. Students will enter the room, get set up, and their smart warm ups (4 minutes)
2. The class will play “Walker Rhythm Warm Up” (3 minutes)
3. Students will then engage in call and response (with backing tracks) (10 minutes)
a. Students will listen to the teacher’s one note rhythm, and copy in response
b. As a group, we will dictate some of these rhythms on the board
4. Students will add their own rhythm for the class to copy, and some of these rhythms will
go through the same dictation procedure
5. Students will take out ​Creature in the Attic
6. Teacher will play some of the rhythms in ​Creature ​in the same call and response game,
and then students will have to go find it in their music. (5 minutes)
a. Possible game: Whoever can find it first, raise their hand, and call it out gets a
tootsie roll.
7. Students will disassemble, swab, pack and get ready to go to their next class (4 minutes)
8. Mrs. Allen will give instructions for the last portion class time.
Assessment

1. Students will be given a grade for bringing all of their materials to class
a. Book, instrument, music, etc.
2. Students will be informally assessed on participation in call and response activities.
3. Students will receive tootsie roll rewards when following instructions quickly, notating a
rhythm correctly, and winning a “point” in the ​Creature ​game.
