Lesson A: Book/Pass Offs/rhythm of the day

Objectives
1. Students will engage in call and response, and come up with their own quarter-eighth
note rhythms.
2. Students will take their playing tests as individuals and in pairs throughout class.
3. Students will clap, count, and perform the “Rhythm of the Day”.

Standards
EI.1 The student will echo, read, and notate music, including
1. identifying, defining, and using basic standard notation for pitch, rhythm, meter,
articulation, dynamics, and other elements of music;

EI.2 The student will echo, read, and perform simple rhythms and rhythmic patterns,
including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted half notes, dotted
quarter notes, and corresponding rests.

EI.4 The student will identify, read, and perform music in simple meters.

Procedures
1. Students will come into the classroom and begin their smart warm ups.
2. Students will engage in call and response, focusing on mimicking quarter-eighth rhythms
given by the instructor. Individual students will take the lead in the exercise and come up
with their own rhythms for the class to mimic.
3. Students will play through these songs as a group and then in pairs or as individuals for
pass-offs.
4. Students will learn, write in counts, and perform the “Rhythm of the Day” for candy
prizes.

Assessment
1. Students will be formally assessed on if they bring all of their materials (music,
instrument, book, pencil, etc.) and will be given “preparation” points.
2. Students will be informally assessed on their participation and playing throughout the
lesson.
3. Students will be formally assessed on their playing tests and “Rhythm of the Day”,
performed individually or in pairs if needed.

Lesson B: Pass Offs/Concert Music/Rhythm

Objectives
1. Students will engage in call and response, and come up with their own quarter-eighth
note rhythms.
2. Students will take their playing tests as individuals and in pairs throughout class.
3. Students will work on concert music.
4. Students will learn and perform “Rhythm of the Day”, which contains rhythms found in
their concert music for candy prizes.

Standards

articulation, dynamics, and other elements of music;

EI.2 The student will echo, read, and perform simple rhythms and rhythmic patterns,
including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted half notes, dotted
quarter notes, and corresponding rests.

EI.4 The student will identify, read, and perform music in simple meters.

EI.12 The student will demonstrate ensemble skills at a beginning level, including 1.
playing unisons, in accordance with VBODA Levels 0 and 1; 2. differentiating between
unisons that are too high or low in order to match pitches, and making adjustments to
facilitate correct intonation;

EI.14 The student will begin to use articulations and dynamic contrasts as means of
expression.

Procedures
