Climate change
Humans are the main reason for climate change: global pollution, ice caps
Climate.nasa.nat.gov
The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely
(greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th
century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.Warming
trends are strongest in the Arctic region, where 2018 saw the continued loss of sea ice. In
addition, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets continued to contribute to sea
level rise. Increasing temperatures can also contribute to longer fire seasons and some extreme
weather events, according to Schmidt.
The fingerprints that humans have left on Earth's climate are turning up in a diverse range of
records and can be seen in the ocean, in the atmosphere, and on the Earth’s surface.Scientists
agree that today’s warming is primarily caused by humans putting too much carbon in the
atmosphere, like when we choose to extract and burn coal, oil, and gas, or cut down and burn
forests.T hough people have had the largest impact on our climate since 1950, natural changes
to Earth’s climate have also occurred in recent times. For example, two major volcanic
eruptions, El Chichon in 1982 and Pinatubo in 1991, pumped sulfur dioxide gas high into the
atmosphere. The gas was converted into tiny particles that lingered for more than a year,
reflecting sunlight and shading Earth’s surface. Temperatures across the globe dipped for two to
three years.‘One of the things that scientists think is causing global warming is greenhouse gasses.
“Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. Long-lived gases that remain
semi-permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to changes in
temperature are described as "forcing" climate change. Gases, such as water vapor, which respond
physically or chemically to changes in temperature are seen as
"feedbacks"’(https://climate.nasa.gov/causes/).
This shows that greenhouse gasses can be a major effect in global warming. Humans are also the
people that create most of the greenhouse gasses when we burn fossil fuels such as, coal, oil, gas,
and many other things.

Humans aren't the main reason for climate change:

Earth's temperature depends on the balance between energy entering and leaving the planet’s
system. When incoming energy from the sun is absorbed by the Earth system, Earth warms.
When the sun’s energy is reflected back into space, Earth avoids warming. When absorbed
energy is released back into space, Earth cools
Volcanic eruptions discharge carbon dioxide, but they may also emit aerosols, such as volcanic
ash or dust, and sulfur dioxide. Aerosols are liquids and solids that float around in the air. They
may also include soot, dust, salt crystals, bacteria, and viruses. Aerosols scatter incoming solar

radiation, causing a slight cooling effect. Volcanic aerosols can block a percentage of sunlight
and cause a cooling that may last for 1-2 years.Digital Earth Crust

As tectonic plates move over geological timescales, landmasses are carried along to different
positions and latitudes. These changes affect global circulation patterns of air and ocean water
and the climate of the continents. One form of evidence for plate tectonics and an example of
how plate tectonics affects climate is the location of coal mines. Coal mines were formed over
millions of years ago in tropical areas, yet are found at higher latitudes today. You also learned
in the Temperature Over Time module that, since the industrial revolution, the Northern
Hemisphere has warmed more than the Southern Hemisphere. This is because the Northern
Hemisphere has a larger percentage of Earth’s landmass compared to ocean than the Southern
Hemisphere. Remember that landmasses warm faster than oceans due to the high heat
capacity of the oceansEarth's temperature depends on the balance between energy entering
and leaving the planet’s system. When incoming energy from the sun is absorbed by the Earth
system, Earth warms. When the sun’s energy is reflected back into space, Earth avoids
warming. When absorbed energy is released back into space, Earth cools. Many factors, both
natural and human, can cause changes in Earth’s energy balance.”On average, Earth will
become warmer. Some regions may welcome warmer temperatures, but others may
not”(h ttps://climate.nasa.gov/causes/). This shows that earth has natural climate change cycles
in certain regions which
