ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The 2 months span of my internship in SK Toh Architect has been a great experience and given
much insight about the industry. The opportunity to work with professionals has enabled me to
learn more about the formalities and technicalities of how an architectural firm is being run.

I would like to extend my gratitude towards Ar Toh Siew Kian for letting me join his company and Ar
Toh June Li for guiding me through the processes of a project execution. Asides from them, I would
also like to thank Miss Nadia, Mr Mamu and Miss Fizani for giving me various tasks to execute and
showing me tips when using Revit and AutoCad. While I lacked in many aspects, I am grateful for
their willingness to teach me.

I also want to thank my tutor, Dr. Sujatavani Gunasagaran, who took time to visit the company and
meeting my supervisor to ensure I was kept in check with work and could benefit as much as
possible from the internship.

INTRODUCTION : MODULE

This module is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and operations
involved in working in architectural / construction practices. The purpose is to facilitate the
involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in order to develop
an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation as applied
to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to the
process of authority submission for various drawings from an architectural practice and the range
of contract documentation produced to support these drawings.

Via a full-time internship attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation and
report-writing skills required of an employee (architectural assistant / architect) in a typical
architect’s firm.

INTRODUCTION : SK TOH ARCHITECTS

(text taken out from company’s portfolio)

SK TOH ARCHITECTS is an architectural sole proprietorship established in 1997 by Ar Toh Siew Kian.
The practice was conceived from its pioneer involvement in the development of the Kota Warisan
township in Sepang. Since then, the practice has been involved in various housing and mixed
development projects.

In 2015, JSK ARCHITECTS was founded by Ar Toh Siew Kian and Ar Toh June Li. This partnership is a
combination of SK Toh’s years of knowledge and experience in project management and JL Toh’s
xuberance in design and technical detailing. We aim to elevate the spirit of architectural design and
practice to the next level, with active engagement in more robust and challenging projects.

We place the best interest of our Clients as the primary objective by providing personal service
through the Principals’ direct involvement in the everyday professional activities of the firm. In our
projects, we constantly seek to achieve improved design, with emphasis on the needs of the

occupants through careful detailing and logical configuration of the built environment without
sacrificing commercial reality.

Current and future projects, large or small, are conceived and managed using the latest BIM
application systems thereby enhancing coordination while minimising discrepancies among the
different disciplines involved in each project. Ultimately in this BIM environment, the Client will
benefit through a more effective project implementation and efficient cost management.

Both practices are well supported by professionally trained personnel with wide experience in
planning, design and project management. Our combined portfolios include private residences,
mixed housing development, condominiums, industrial projects, hotels and commercial
development.

PROJECTS INVOLVED
GLENGOWRIE SHOPLOT PROPOSAL, SEMENYIH
Software : REVIT, AUTOCAD

Base plan for drawings Meeting with client

Specifications : Shoplots
Supervisor : Fizani, Mamu, Ar Toh Siew Kian
Tasks :
➔ Research on previous shoplot projects by the company
➔ Attempt at design proposal
➔ Precedent studies on existing buildings that relate to the theme of the brief given

This is a new project to be built in a new township in Semenyih. Currently, the area has yet to be developed but
proposals are pitched the clients first. The Glengowrie Shoplot proposal brief was given the together with the
Modern Tropical terrace proposal. I was called in during the mid-December 2018 as that was the time the brief
was given to the company. The due date for this proposal was 2 weeks from the given date.

For shoplots, we had to consider what were the requirements needed to make the building function as workshop.
Examples of criteria is listed as below:
● 5-foot walkway
● Space for signages
● Air Conditioning placement

Asides from that, the facade of the building had to liaise with the landscaping theme of the potential township.
From this project, I was able to attend proposal meetings with client and hear their input towards the proposed
designs, taking note of the rules and regulations set by UBBL and executing a cost effective design.

MODERN TROPICAL TERRACE PROPOSAL, SEMENYIH
Software : AUTOCAD

Potential layouts Calculating built up area

Specifications : Residential
Supervisor : Fizani, Nadia, Ar Toh June Li
Tasks :
➔ Calculate built up area

The next aspect of the potential township was the terrace housing. The brief required 3 different
layout proposals of different sizings with the facade design in the theme of ‘Modern Tropical’. I was
tasked to calculate the built up area of the layouts to ensure they meet the requirements of the
client. This is to ensure there will not be extra costs incurred if the layouts were to be approved of
and built. It was done by tracing the outline of the room from the middle of the walls and getting
the area calculations from Autocad.

RENOVATION PROPOSAL, DAMANSARA

Software : REVIT

(Note: Releasing drawings & information relating to Metropolitan Square in strictly confidential)

For this project, I was tasked to amend the existing layout of an existing building to change its initial
function to something else. I used Revit to make the adjustments and discussed with my supervisor
on the new amendments that will maximise the usability of the spaces. These amend layouts will
then be proposed to the client.

LOT 63 RENOVATION PROJECT, SEPANG
Software : AUTOCAD

Drawings of existing and renovated features

Specifications : Residential
Supervisor : Fizani, Ar Toh Siew Kian
Tasks :
➔ Update approve plans with modified facade
➔ Prepare submission plans and documents to relevant authorities (BOMBA, Municipal Council etc)

One of the bigger projects I was tasked with. I had to do the drawings amendments up to the
standards of the council and prepare the paperwork to the relevant authorities. However for this
particular building, I was tasked to redraw the certain features of the building facade that had
already been built but didn’t follow the approved plans. The client had made some modifications
from the original approved plans and had to resubmit the modification plans to the relevant
authorities. A fine was incurred but that will be dealt by the client. We only had to prepare the
relevant documents for them and Ar Toh Siew Kian would advise them accordingly.

It was an eye opening experience to go through the technicalities of the whole process. From
modifying the drawings and undergoing the legal process of preparing documents has made me
realise the importance of being meticulous.

MISCELLANEOUS TASKS

Specifications : -
Supervisor : Mamu
Tasks :
➔ Create templates in Revit
Other the tasks I was given was setting Revit templates to the company standards in order to
standardise the materials used and export it to the company's ctb file settings. Asides from this, I
also made the parametric title blocks for submission to authorities on Revit to ease the process of
data input.

CONCLUSION

The internship experience in an architectural firm has been a fruitful one and had gave me a better
understanding on what working in the industry was like. It was different from learning the theories
in classes and being told the experiences from lecturers and tutors alike.

During my limited time in SK Toh Architect, the tasks given to me made me realise the importance
of being very critical to details. I may have not held a lot of bigger roles and dabbled in some
projects but every task I was handed played a crucial role in ensuring that the project can pull
through.

Getting the hands on experience gave me the opportunity to utilise the programmes we used such
Revit and Autocad effectively. I was fortunate enough to witness the meetings with clients and
subcontractors. These meetings allowed me to understand the protocols of the pre-execution of
the projects.

In some cases, we also used older projects as references for newer similar projects. Almost similar
to how in studio we would do precedents studies.
