1.0 PURPOSE
The aim of this document is to describe procedure for selecting, collecting, and
dispatching a coal core samples in a consistent way of the core recovered borehole
so that the subsequent analysis is representative used for evaluation coal quality
and characterisation

2.0 SCOPE
The procedure applies to Drill Supervisor, Project Geologist who in charge in
sampling a coal core in the drilling operation which is commenced once the core
has been logged until the dispatch of sample from drillsite to Bumbun Camp.

3.0 REFERENCE
Procedure: MCP Drill site Procedure Manual, June 2005.
Procedure: IMC_EX_P001_SOP_Field Data Naming Standard_V01.
Form: IMC _EX_F004_Coal Sample Submission Sheet.
Form: IMC _EX_F013_Tear Off Sample Label.

4.0 DEFINITION
Shall and Should The word "shall" is to be understood as mandatory and the word
"should" as non-mandatory, advisory or recommended.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Introduction
The collection and dispatch coal for analysis are important for resource and reserve
estimations. The analytical results that supplied by laboratory is used as basis for
coal quality models for long and short term mine plan, prediction of wash coal
quality, and maintain coal quality in mining operation.
In early exploration stage in the undeveloped area, the coal samples is essentials
for the viability of a potential mine.
5.2 Selecting Sample Intervals
Coal seams and stratigraphy in Maruwai Coal Project are already well established in
each resource block. The sampling interval is determined before drilling carried out.
However at some resource block area with coal quality specific requirement like
Haju resource block, the different coal sample procedure is applied after discussion
between mine plan superintendent, coal quality engineer, and resource delineation
manager. In the field in any decision to change well established sample interval

shall be made only after consultation with and agreement by Geology

superintendent.
For the areas where coal seams are uncorrelated and stratrigraphy poorly
understood, sampling should be at discretion of the geologist, based on seam
brightness logs and/or geophysical logs, using its experience and professional
expertise. Geologists should not combine samples if there is any doubt, please
subdivided sample into several plies base on coal brightness and/or lithology
difference as once sample is combined they can not be split. Subdivision samples
can be combined later at the laboratory.
The general guideline for selecting sample interval is:
• All seam intersection 0.30 m or equal/greater in thickness shall be sampled
for analysis. This guideline applies to the total seam thickness rather than
individual coaly plies in an interbanded seam;
• Minimum individual sample thickness shall be 0.20 m; There is no maximum
thickness, the seam will be subdivided if there is change in character;
• Oxidized (weathered) or coal/heat affected coal shall be sampled separately.
• It is also required to sample 20 cm of the immediate roof and floor and
request laboratory to carry out appropriate analysis. This sampling allows
calculate roof and floor dilution effects during various mining techniques.
5.3 Sampling, Labelling, and Sample Report Sheets
The Drill Supervisor/Field Geologist shall sample the coal and label the samples
using the following steps:
• Prepare transparent plastic sample bags by writing project, hole identifier,
and sample number on two bags, and sliding one bag inside the other to
ensure sample security.
• Handle the section of coal core carefully as it is extracted from the core
barrel.
• Transfer the core onto a core table that has been constructed to receive the
length and diameter of the core being drilled.
• Remove all drilling mud or cutting from the core using clean water.
• Measure the core recovery using tape measure, decide amount and place of
core loss and mark the core loss including interval depth in blackboard. You
should discuss with driller to determine depth interval of possibility core loss.
• Mark the depth of core every 0.5 m on the core using chalk or crayon.
• Take photograph of core every 1.5 m that showing depth of core on
blackboard.
• Record lithology onto sedimentary lithology sheet and ensure that sample
number is recorded on the lithology log and on the sample submission
sheet.
• Decide where we will take the coal core sample that based on sample
protocol guideline and then mark the sample interval on the clean core with
chalk or crayon.
• For coal seam with thickness more than 40 cm, cut each coal sample 40cm
length for easy loading to cartoon.

• Split the core at the sample boundaries cleanly.

• Place the core samples in their bags, taking care to include the complete
sample.
• Place sample label that has been marked (borehole number, sample
number, number of samples, date sampled, and lithology name) between
the two bags, once the total number used has been determined.
• Fold inner bag over to preserve moisture, and secure with tape at the top of
outer bag.
• All samples are recorded in coal sample report sheet including borehole
number, sample number, sample depth interval that has been corrected by
geophysical log, lithology name, etc.
5.4 Core boxing and Labelling
The drill supervisor shall carry out core boxing and labelling using the following
steps:
• Once sufficient quantities of samples have been collected, all samples are
loaded into cartoon with max length of each sample is 40 cm. The cartoon
should be labelled with coal sample report sheet and address of destination,
and number of cartoon. The cartoons are usually dispatched to Geoservices
Balikpapan (address below); however, the dispatch destination and address
shall be confirmed by Project Geologist/ Superintendent Geology.
Geoservices Laboratory
Jl. M.T Haryono No. 161,
Balikpapan 76114
• The cartoon lid shall be securely wrapped with tape and well packaged in
order not broken during transportation.
• The rest of the core recovered borehole that not sampled shall be loaded
into core box, mark project, borehole number, depth interval each core box,
total of core box, etc
• In corebox, coal core section that has been taken should be replaced with
wooden or Styrofoam blocks or PVC cut to size and give remark (depth,
sample number, type of sample taken, etc) and take photograph for every
corebox.
5.5 Sample Dispatch
The interval between drilling and testing period shall be kept to a minimum.
Consequently, the transport of samples to the appropriate destination need to be
planned, and arrangement put in place as part of the drilling program.
Transport arrangements are handled by logistic/operation personnel. However Drill
supervisor is responsible for dispatching core samples from drillsite to temporary
refrigerator storage in camp and then transport to Balikpapan warehouse, before
they are sent to Geoservice Laboratory Balikpapan.
Before sending cartoons of core samples from drill camp to Balikpapan office, the
following procedure shall be followed;

• Logging: Have core samples been correctly logged and geophysically

adjusted?
• Recording: Has the appropriate record been made of all samples?
• Sample packaging: Has the sample been packaged in the required manner
to protect it?
• Labelling: Have all samples been label in the approved manner?
After sending the cartoon of coal sample, the Drill supervisor shall email a
notification letter including coal sample report to Project Geologist/ Superintendent
Geology that will follow up to laboratory supervisor.
