The Grid
● Network of transmission lines, transformers, etc. that deliver electricity to
buildings
● Current grid was built in 1890s
● Outdated
○ Small Fluctuations can become large outages
What makes the grid “smart”?
● The direct communication between the customer and the provider.
● Ability to quickly change levels of output based on energy demands.
● Instant snapshots of the entire grid
● Better crisis management
What is a Smart Grid
● Digital
● Two way connection between utilities and their customers
● Consists of controls, computers, automation, etc.
What is Smart Grid Data
Smart Grid Data is the information collected by the electrical power infrastructure of
the future.

It collects data from new monitoring communications that will enable the collection
of data constantly from the power grid itself.

With this data it can show the full range of how energy is being used and how to better
utilize the electrical infrastructure and save energy and money by looking at the
demand levels that the data will show.
Using Smart Grid Data
The consumers can also benefit as well.

With the new smart grid data gathering method, it can show the users how much
electricity they are using during a certain hour and how much it is costing them.

Customers can have a customized plan with companies using the smart grid data.
They can customize the consumers plans based on past usage patterns.

Everyone's electrical usage can be planned out with companies seeing where the spikes
of power are being used. But don't worry about them knowing everything, they will
just know when the spikes are in time and not what is causing them.

● Basic applications of smart grids:
○ Improve transmission lines
○ Quick recovery
○ Cost
○ Peak demand
○ Ability to be integrated
● Advantages:
○ Overall efficiency
○ Lower cost for all
○ Lower electric power rates
○ Security and protection
