1 Introduction
Several new GDS 2 functions have been introduced to make it easier for technicians to
navigate through GDS 2 and communicate more effectively.

2 News for the June 2014 GDS 2 version

make, model and VIN digits 1-3.

2.2 E-mail Button

In the Edit Session File Selection where users can review stored data from the GDS 2 main
screen, a new E-mail button is available. (Fig. 2) From the stored data, select the Edit
button and then select a session file to activate the E-mail function. Technicians can send
session and other log files directly to an e-mail specified by the user.

In the E-mail screen, an E-mail address must be added manually. The Subject name is
created according to the selected session name. Attachments are added to one zip file and
renamed Attachments.piz. ( Fig. 3) Error logs are automatically added.

2.3 New Tabbing Function

To more easily navigate through GDS 2, use the Tab, Shift + Tab, Alt + Tab, Enter, Up
Arrow, and Down Arrow keys on the keyboard. (Fig. 4) The keyboard tabbing functions
provides faster access and navigation to various components. The selected components
are identified by dashed lines or blue borders around the selection or a slight coloration.

As there were some changes in this area, this section provides a recap of things to know
about starting and updating GDS 2.

3.2 Start via TIS2Web

The following symbol leads to the GDS 2 page:

To provide latest information about GDS 2 there may be pop-up messages being displayed
before GDS 2 finally starts. It's recommended to carefully read such messages.

The application will be started by selecting the "Start GDS 2" button:

There are three reasons that require starting GDS 2 via TIS2Web:

1. Initial installation
2. Update of the GDS 2 core system (not necessary for updates of the diagnostic
packages)
3. Renewal of the lease every 30 days

Important:
It is important to know that if GDS 2 is being started from TIS2Web and there
is an update of the core system pending there will be no option to skip this
update.

The update of the core system will start as soon as the "Start GDS 2" button has been
selected and must not be interrupted.

3.3 Start via Desktop Icon

The installation procedure creates a desktop icon that can be used to start GDS 2 by
double clicking:

3.4 Start via Windows Start Menu

The installation procedure also creates an entry within the Windows start menu that can be
used to start GDS 2:

3.5 Updating Diagnostic Content

3.5.1 Optional Update of Diagnostic Packages

If new Diagnostic Packages are available an Update button is being displayed beneath the
Diagnostics picture. As long as Diagnostic is still enabled there's no need to do the update
at this very moment. If necessary, the update can be done at a later time.

3.5.2 Mandatory Update / Initial Installation

Following an initial install or after an incompatible update of the core system the Diagnostic
Packages have to be updated. The Diagnostics picture will be disabled in this case and no
diagnostic operations can be performed until the updates have been installed as shown
below:

Select "Update".

3.5.3 Recommended Practice

With the various changes made to GDS 2 there are two possible concepts to work with
GDS 2:

1. Always start GDS 2 from TIS2Web

This automatically ensures that you always have the latest GDS 2 core system
installed. The "Update" button informs you of available GDS 2 package updates.
Disadvantage: You cannot skip a Core Software update. Therefore you always need
to wait for any update to complete before you can work with GDS 2 again. If you
know in advance that you have no time for an update you may start locally (i.e. from
the Start Menu or Desktop) in that case.
2. Always start locally and once per month from TIS2Web
The lease expiration time has been extended to 30 days recently. Therefore, you
may choose to only start from TIS2Web once a month to renew the lease and install
potential core system updates. New diagnostic packages will still be available via the
"Update" button as long as the lease has not expired. With this method you have
control about when updates are installed.
