If it looks like the future,
that´s because it is membrane constructions

In their search for new architectural means of expression, planners have dis-
covered the opportunities offered by the use of membranes. Translucent and
transparent membranes permit freedom of design and variety of shape in a
way that no other material can offer.
The flexible play with the form opens up hitherto unsuspected horizons to the
architect, as rigid structures with clear barrier outlines are no longer required.
Self supporting shapes that are curved within space can be interpreted in ever
new ways with the use of membranes. At the same time, light becomes a
design element in itself which can be used in an experimental and even play-
ful fashion, lending different visual forms and aspects to one and the same
building.
The following references show what is already achievable today in the area of
membrane architecture:
· Large span widths: PTFE-coated fiber glass textile
· Flexibility: PTFE textile
· Light and UV permeability: films made of ETFE
· Special textile coated with fluorothermoplastics

Let them inspire you to create innovative designs which transcend traditional
barriers. Materials from Dyneon allow tomorrow’s dreams to become reality
today.
Please note that foil and membrane manufacturers and constructors as well
as their brand names are mentioned in the articles to understand the context
of each project.

Foil constructions
remain durable even
in the highest mountains
The Gaislachkogl gondola
in Ötztal’s Sölden ski resort
Gale-force winds, heavy snow, temperature variations of 60 degree Celsius and intense UV radiation: build-
ings in the mountains have extreme requirements. Now environmentally-friendly lightweight buildings, using
foil architecture with films extruded from highly transparent and durable 3M™ Dyneon™ ETFE high-perfor-
mance plastic, are conquering the highest altitudes in the mountains for the first time.

The impressive Gaislachkogl gondola, which opened in 2010 at the popular Sölden ski resort in Ötztal, Aus-
tria, carries winter sports enthusiasts from the valley at 1,363 metres to the peaks at 3,040 metres, making
the lift stations the highest foil constructions in the world.

The first section of the ski lift carries up to 3,600 passengers an hour on the world’s highest-capacity single
cable gondola.

The second stage sees the highest three-cable gondola anywhere rise to 3,040 metres. The elegantly-
sculpted gondola stations were designed and built with covers that can withstand mountain winds of up to
300 kilometres per hour. This called for the extremely high tear-resistance of NOWOFLON® ET 6235Z foils.

These foils are also non-flammable, they have near-universal chemical resistance and, unlike traditional
plastics, they are resistant to powerful UV radiation at altitude. The foils also have low-energy surfaces, which
prevent snow from gathering, and a rain shower can clean the foils, saving money on maintenance.

Multi-layer cushions are normally used for closed buildings as they have good heat insulation properties. The
Gaislachkogl gondola stations are unheated, so single layer foils were used.
