DRUG REGULATIONS
& WITHDRAWAL TIMES
UPDATED: 2014-08-01
In this document you will find information about general regulations on the use of medicinal
products etc., and a list of withdrawal times for substances (drugs).
Section 43 (shortened)
For horses participating in races in Sweden, the following measures are prohibited.
Section 44 (shortened)
The bodily fluids (urine, blood) of a horse must not, when analysed, contain substances that
do not naturally occur in the body or cannot result from the natural consumption of fodder.
For certain substances that naturally occur in the body or can be linked to fodder there are
certain threshold limits that may not be exceeded. For some other pharmaceutical substances
reporting levels of detection are used.
Horses that are intended to participate in a competitive event or are being trained in ways that
are comparable with participation in a competitive event may not be subject to any special
treatment, such as alternative treatment methods, acupuncture, TNS, laser treatment,
blistering and electricity, for instance, that can during the competitive event or the training
have a positive or negative impact on the horse’s current ability to perform.

For certain substances, certain treatments and certain other special measures, a qualifying
period applies for a horse which is to be entered in a competitive event or trained in a way
which is comparable with participation in a competitive event. These qualifying periods are
detailed in the special lists of withdrawal times.
NOTICE!
This is a shortened version of the regulations concerning the use of drugs in connection to
races regulated by the Swedish Trotting Association. For a complete version in Swedish please
see Tävlingsreglemente för Svensk Travsport (Competition Regulations for Swedish Trotting).
Any violation of the medical rules will be punished. The normal fine is 1 percent of the
average of yearly earned prize money based on the last three years + 10 percent of the prize
money to the winner in the race where the positive finding was made.
WITHDRAWAL TIMES
This list consists of substances/drugs which are registered for use in horses in Sweden. All
other drugs are not evaluated. The withdrawal times are based on standard dosages in Sweden
as they are recommended in Fass Vet. (the pharmaceutical manual for veterinary drugs in
Sweden). Note that this is withdrawal times for competition and training for competition, not
for slaughter.

* All types of electrical devices for external treatment of the horse in the racing area during the
competing day are not allowed since January 1th 1999. For more information please see
Tävlingsreglemente för Svensk Travsport (Competition Regulations for Swedish Trotting).
** Medical technology products shall from withdrawal time point of view be considered as
drugs. The withdrawal time is determined by the active substances and is at least the same as
for the corresponding drug. Since these products are not medicines intended for horses they
are always used at one´s own risk.
