TOPIC : Kabuki

Objectives :
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
1. Appreciate Kabuki as an Asian musical theater.
2. Determine the distinct characteristic of Kabuki traditional theatre arts.
3. Perform a simple Kabuki rhythmic accompaniment.
Introduction :
Ask the student about the costume that their teacher is wearing.
Tell the students that Kimono is one characteristic of a Kabuki play.
Let’s have another one.
Priming: Let us look at the picture on the slide. What can you say about it?
I. Activity
Each group must choose one representative to portray a character in a Kabuki
play. It can be a protagonist or antagonist. The other members will help put on makeup /
face paint and help in wearing the robe to complete the task. They will only be given 5
minutes to do this activity. The best character will be chosen and a representative from
that group will have a chance to explain their work.
II. Analysis
1. What can you say about the make up /face paint ?
2. Why did you choose this character?
III. Abstraction
1.The student will watch a short video clip about the origin of the
Kabuki. Make sure they can answer the following questions.
Where did they derive the word Kabuki?
Who is the founder of Kabuki?
Where did they first perform?
2. Discussion about the videos.
3. What are the other characteristics of Kabuki play?

4. Teach them a rhythmic accompaniment to a kabuki
presentation following the rhythm patterns given below:

IV. Application
1. The teacher will give improvised instruments to each group
and let them create their own beat using the improvised
instruments provided by the teacher and let their character
dance or pantomime the music.
