Jessi Do you know a "Budo" ("martial arts") called "Shorinji
Kempo?" Today, we would like to visit the "dojo" in which

to you "Shorinji Kempo," which is one of "Japan's Nine

"History"
Yuki (quote) Founded in Japan in 1947 by Doshin So, "Shorinji
Kempo" is a way of developing individuals who are useful
to society with confidence, courage, vigor, and compassion
through a combination of learning, mastery of techniques,
and a unique education system. It advocates a society in

through the nurturing of reliable individuals.
Jessi So that's the idea behind "Shorinji Kempo." Doesn't it
come from China?
Yuki No, many people think it comes from China, but it was
actually founded in Japan.

"Outfits"
Jessi Let's take a look now at a training session and see what
they actually do.
What do people wear when they practice?
Yuki It's called a "dogi," and it's similar to the attire for
karate and judo, although the material is a little
different.
Jessi Everyone has a different colored "obi" ("belt"). Why's
that?
Yuki Depending on your rank, the color is different. It goes in

the order of white, yellow, green, brown, and black.

"Greetings"
Jessi It looks like the way they greet each other is different
too.
Yuki You're right. When we greet each other, we do a
"gasshorei," which means we press our hands together in
prayer. Also, a regular standing position is slightly
different. It's called "kesshu," and you stand like this.
This is the "kiwotsuke" (or "standing at attention"
position.)

Yuki This is called "goho," and it's a technique that consists
of striking and kicking. There's also one called "juho,"
which consists of throwing and pinning the opponent. Let's
first take a look at "goho."

Yuki It is! We use this technique to avoid your opponent's
strikes and kicks and then counterattack with strikes and

and arms or clothing. It's a very useful self-protection
