Assignment # 1

Due: Monday, February 4th, 2019 at 9:00 am

To be submitted Electronically on OWL as one PDF file

ETABS Model are to be submitted on OWL DropBox (OWL/CEE 9548/Dropbox)

Problem 1

Using the Building Example provided on OWL and provided in the lecture notes
1) Calculate the building’s wind base shear in N-S and E-W directions using the
NBCC (National Building Code of Canada) 2015 procedures (Hand-calculations)
2) Calculate the building’s wind base shear for cases B, C, and D using the 2015
NBCC procedures discussed in the course notes (Hand-calculations)
3) Calculate the maximum tension and compression forces in the bracing members
under N-S and E-W wind load cases only (Hand-calculations)
4) Calculate the maximum tension forces in the bracing members under N-S and E-
W wind load cases only for the case of tension only bracing system (Hand-
calculations)
5) Calculate the building’s seismic base shear in N-S and E-W directions using the
NBCC procedures (Hand-calculations)
6) Develop a full 3D ETABS model of the same building. ETABS model (Student
name.edb) is to be submitted on OWL Dropbox (OWL/CEE 9548/Dropbox)
7) Using ETABS Model;
a. Provide the building’s wind base shear in N-S and E-W directions using
the NBCC procedures
b. Provide the building’s seismic base shear in N-S and E-W directions using
the NBCC procedures
1
c. Provide the maximum tension and compression forces in the bracing
members under N-S and E-W wind load cases only
d. Provide the maximum tension forces in the bracing members under N-S
and E-W wind load cases only for the case of tension only bracing system
8) Compare between the Hand Calculations results and ETABS Model results and
provide explanations (questions 1 to 7) – (significant marks are assigned for this
question)
9) Using ETABS Model;
e. Using Rigid Diaphragm Assumption
i. Provide the maximum tension and compression forces in the
bracing members under all wind load cases and specify which load
cases leads to the maximum tension and compression forces
ii. Provide the maximum top deflection
f. Using Semi-rigid Diaphragm Assumption
i. Provide the maximum tension and compression forces in the
bracing members under all wind load cases and specify which load
cases leads to the maximum tension and compression forces
ii. Provide the maximum top deflection
g. Compare between the rigid diaphragm and the semi-rigid diaphragm case
results and provide explanations (significant marks are assigned for this
question)

10) Check the design of the bracing members under the factored tension forces (Tf)
provided on drawing S3.0

Assumptions
- The building is located in London, ON
- Gravity loading information (if needed) is provided on drawing S1.1 – including
snow loads
- Wind and Seismic loading information is provided on drawing S1.1
