things have transformed in
society [or haven’t], what
follows is a column from

selves in towels and sprinted
around the side of the cabin,
over the patches of snow, and
into the tub. I had prepared
myself for a chilling experi-
ence, but to the full credit of
the snorkel stove and Ryan’s
perseverance, it was warm!
As wind whistled over the
tub, we huddled in the water,
pleased with this first dabble
in backwoods luxury. The
stars were beautiful, and our
little cabin looked cozy in the
thin moon-shadows.

Fair at the LRH campus in
the Medical Office Building.
The event will be free and

crafters will be on hand with

as far away as Manchester,
NH. Items that will be on
display and on sale include
pottery, jewelry, wooden

riencing a loss at our facility,

In early November, I flicked
on the porch light and took
out the trash. In the brief
time it took, a couple of late-
season moths found their
way to my porch light, and as
I slipped through the back
door, one of them joined me
inside. I cupped my uninvit-
ed guest under a drinking
glass and took him out for
liberation; and “him” turned
out to be correct.
Before the release, I couldn’t
resist a closer look. It was
unmistakable: a “flunker
moth.” But don’t expend
energy on a Google search; it
will come up empty because
the term is a Vermont origi-
nal coined perhaps by the
commonly called winter
moth; this illustrates why
scientists favor Latin names.)
Insect flight requires warm
muscles and few can muster
the energy to remain airborne
in chilly November air.
Winter moths are only barely
an exception to the pattern:
the females don’t fly at all. If
you are not going to fly, then
it makes little evolutionary
sense to expend resources on
wings, and so the females are
wingless or nearly so.
To get around, female winter
moths crawl up tree trunks
from forest-floor leaf litter.
There they release
pheromones that act as

moths. On warm winter
nights, the male moths fly
short distances to find
females. On cold nights
when their wings fail them,
males are not above hoofing
it up a tree to find a mate.
When they do fly, they don’t
venture far. In one study,
researchers released 800
male O. brumata moths and

moth or butterfly life cycle.
A caterpillar hatches from an
egg, grows, and forms a
pupa, from which the adult
emerges. We know that in
this case the adults do not
disperse, and it is rare for

it must be the caterpillar.
Caterpillars can hardly be
considered world class
sprinters, and marching
across open ground to the
next tree seems a foolhardy
choice. And so, borrowing a

hatch and then spin out
strands of silk that carry
them for hundreds of yards
on the wind.
When they land on a suitable
tree, they crawl up and feast
on fresh young leaves for
about six weeks. When they
have grown to full size, they

silk strands and pupate in the
soil. They emerge as adults

On a walk in the Grafton
County Farm forest the other
day, amid the gray trunks and
remaining dull orange leaves
of the oaks and beeches,
some small bright yellow
flowers stood out. Flowers in
November? They belonged
to the witch hazel, an abun-
dant shrub on the county for-
est.
Description, Range, Natural
History
American Witch Hazel,
Hamamelis virginiana, is a
woodland shrub native to
eastern North America. It
ranges from Nova Scotia to
Florida, and from the lake
states to eastern Texas. The
plant grows well on medium

Uses

hazel were reportedly used
as dowsing rods. According
to the US Forest Service, the
name witch hazel was possi-
bly derived from this use.
“Wicke” is Middle English
meaning “lively”, and
“wych” means “bend” in
Anglo-Saxon. A dowsing rod
allegedly bends and points
toward the source of water
when found.

The sound of a gray jay
(Perisoreus canadensis)
evokes an image of the North
Woods: dark green spruce
trees, spire-like balsam fir,
and bare-branched tamaracks
silhouetted against a raw,
slate-colored sky; the smell
of woodsmoke in the air and
a dusting of fresh snow on
the ground. I see these birds
occasionally around our
cabin in northern New
Hampshire and on hikes at
higher elevations in the
White Mountains. They’ve
always had an air of mystery
about them.
The bird is often heard
before it’s seen. The gray jay
has a number of calls, whis-
tles, and imitations in his
repertoire: many are harsh
sounding, and I have wit-
nessed gray jays mimic the
scream of the blue jay. My
favorite call, though, is what
some ornithologists refer to
as “the whisper song.” This
is a soft, warbling chatter
that can sound either cheer-
ful or melancholy – depend-
ing, I suppose, on the mood
of the listener. Not long after
hearing the whisper song, a
group of birds will suddenly
appear, silently swooping
and gliding from branch to
branch.
The gray jay is a bird of
many names. One of the
most common – and the old-
est – is “whisky jack,” an
anglicized spelling of
Wisakedjak, a mythological
troublemaker in Cree lore.
Other names include Canada
jay, whisky john, moosebird,
caribou bird, camp robber,
corberie, and my personal
favorite – “gorby,” or “gor-
bey.” Gorby is thought to be
derived from the Scots-Irish
gorb, meaning “glutton” or
“greedy animal,” with the

name likely having spread to
Maine via New Brunswick
woodsmen in the 1800s.
Gorbies are intelligent and
inquisitive birds whose far
southern range just touches
parts of northern Maine,
New Hampshire, Vermont,
and areas of the
Adirondacks. They live an
average of eight years, but
the oldest on record was
banded in 1985 and recap-
tured and released in 2002. A
pair mates for life and will
hold and defend a permanent
territory year round. They
breed in late winter, and the
male selects a nesting site,
usually on the south side of a
mature conifer. The female
completes the well-insulated
nest and lays a clutch of two
to five light-green, speckled
eggs in mid- to-late March.
She incubates the eggs for
18–22 days, and during this
time, she rarely leaves the
nest. The hatchlings are born
helpless and without feathers
into this harsh environment,
but they grow quickly and
are soon flying. Unattached
juveniles from the previous
year are kept away from the
nest initially but help with
the feeding of the young as
they grow.
The gorby is an opportunistic
omnivore and will eat inver-
tebrates, eggs, small mam-
mals, carrion, fungi, fruits,
and seeds are all on the
menu. One was observed
perched on a moose feeding
on blood-filled winter ticks.
Gorbies are hoarders and
cache large quantities of food
in bark crevices to be eaten
throughout the long winter.
The birds are easily tamed
and will learn to associate
humans with food, going so
far as to take food out of the
hand or out of a camp.
Because of the bird’s tame
nature, there’s a lot of folk-
lore associated with them.

relates that it was often
thought that a gorby was the

crafts like pottery, quilting,
watercolors, her perennial
garden, writing poetry, and
unusual crafts like Ukranian
egg decorating and pine nee-
dle basketry. She volunteered
for about 20 years in the arts
and crafts at the North
