I often poke fun of my hiking
friends who are religious in
their pursuit of the almighty
"Grid," that once rare
accomplishment where each
of the four thousand footers
is climbed in each of the
twelve months. That's a total
of 576 peaks and once upon
a time it was only done by
long time hikers who real-
ized that through all their
years of tramping through
the woods that they were so
close to accomplishing the
goal that they decided to go
for it. It was truly rare and
admirable. But eventually
new hikers started setting
their sights on reaching the
holy land of the "Grid" and
now so many people are out
to do it that it no longer
seems like such a big deal.
Dare I even say it will soon
be passé?

Man Cold
Winter officially started a
month ago, and it didn’t take
to long for the flu to appear
in our
home. On the first day of
Christmas break, my oldest
child started to cough. I
could picture our
Christmas morning right
away as we all covered by
blankets, opening our pres-
ents meanwhile tossing
box of tissues to each other.
The last thing I needed in the
year 2018 was a sick family,
especially a sick
husband. We all know that
exceptions- handle sickness
worst than anybody else
in their household. When my
“One” is sick, his sickness
really challenges our mar-
riage. Luckily, we both
have a sense of humor to sur-
vive his battle. After more
than a decade of marriage I
can tell there are 4
stages of a man cold from it
first symptoms to recovery.
The first stage is when the
sickness appears in our
home. My superhero denies
every contact
with the sick person. No
more hugging, kissing and
there must be a certain dis-
tance between them all
the time. As a head of our
household, he has no time to
be sick. He doesn’t hesitate
taking precaution,
and pours Emergen-C into
his every second bottle of
water. He is as tough as old
boots who never gets
sick.
At the next stage, he starts
feeling sickness in his bones.
He discovers sore throat,
body
weakness and starts cough-
ing. Luckily, he is still strong
enough to go to work but
constantly emphasize
the fact, he is getting sick. He
feels the fever way before his
body temperature could
reach 99
Fahrenheit. He doesn’t need
any medicines, but just in
case, he keeps a few cough
drops in his lunch
box.
These verbal sufferings are
followed by the next, suffer-
ing stage. In this stage, the
flu arouses his
inner toddler. He sticks to the
bed and fights for his life. No
man has ever been “kind a
sick”, they are

reminds me, as it always
will, of the journey of life.
From birth to death. Yes, it
can be lonely and dismal, but
it also reminds me that I'm
alive. So when the world
gets so crazy I feel numb and
need to be reminded to
breathe, or something as sin-
fully senseless as what just
happened in Arizona takes
place, I need to feel nature
all around me. I need to
remind myself of the cycle
of life and the magic of that
journey. So I return, as I
imagine I always will.

was killed in Worcester
County in 1732. The few
remaining in Saranac, New
York were dispatched in
1826. John James Audubon
mentioned that by 1851, a
handful of elk could still be
found in Pennsylvania’s
Allegheny Mountains, but
they were gone from the rest
of their former range east of
the Mississippi. In 1880, the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service declared the eastern
subspecies of elk extinct.
As the great elk herds dwin-
dled, Teddy Roosevelt and
others were moved to save
the species in the West.
States enacted hunting regu-
lations and banned market
hunting of elk. Sanctuaries
such as Yellowstone were
established.
There were a few early
attempts to bring elk back to
the Northeast. In the 1890s,
sixty wapiti from Minnesota
were introduced into the
Blue Mountain Game
Reserve in southern New
Hampshire, owned by Austin
Corbin, a wealthy developer.
Later, Corbin’s heirs gave
some elk to the State of New
Hampshire for release. After
the animals damaged crops, a
hunt was authorized, and
today there are no elk in the
state, except on game farms.
In the early 1900s, elk from
Yellowstone were released in
Pennsylvania. Today the elk
herd in the north-central part
of the state numbers about
900, and the Elk Country
Visitor Center is a popular
attraction. Pennsylvania elk
prefer early successional
habitats such as meadows
(often provided by reclaimed
strip mines), shrublands, and
young forests.
In recent years, southern and
midwestern states have rein-
troduced elk. Today,
Kentucky, Virginia, North
Carolina, Tennessee,
Michigan, Arkansas, and
Wisconsin have free-ranging
elk herds. Elk have spread
into West Virginia, and the
first wild elk in 275 years
was sighted in South
Carolina, likely an emigrant
from the herd in Great
Smoky Mountains National
Park. Kentucky in particular
has been a success story, and
now has over 10,000 elk. The
reintroduced elk are a west-
ern subspecies, smaller than
the original eastern elk.
Could elk be restored to the
Northeast? A 1998 study on
the feasibility of restoring
elk to New York by two
SUNY professors found
good habitat, but raised con-
cerns about potential elk-
human conflicts such as
vehicle collisions and crop
damage. New Hampshire
state deer biologist Dan
Bergeron said he would be
concerned about competition
with deer and moose. Walter
Cottrell, once the wildlife
veterinarian for
Pennsylvania, strongly
advised against the idea. He
said Pennsylvania reintro-

wasting disease, a devastat-
ing neurological disease that
afflicts members of the deer
family, became established
in parts of the West.
Arkansas brought the disease
to their state via elk reintro-
duction (the disease cannot
be tested for in live animals).
Bringing elk to the Northeast
would put our white-tail deer
and moose at risk.
We may never hear the
bugling of wild elk in New
England again, but fortunate-
ly can travel south or west to
get a glimpse of, and perhaps
hear, this magnificent ani-
mal.
