NerdWallet, Vermonters are
leaving about $4.6 million on
the table each year, which
works out to about $5,400
per year for eligible students.
That’s over $21,000 in four
years.
When it comes to financial
aid for education and train-
ing after high school, the
sooner you apply the better,
said Marilyn Cargill, vice
president of financial aid
services at VSAC.
“Simply put, no FAFSA, no
financial aid,” Cargill said.
“Vermonters know the cost
of continuing their education
is a big investment. Every
student should file the
FAFSA and a Vermont Grant
application to get all the
financial aid that they are eli-
gible for.”

I feel when walking with
Atticus. He is always just
who he is. There is no play-
acting, no posing, no trying
to slip into some role that
will make him more appreci-
ated, and he never worries
about fitting in whatsoever.

Winter Driving
Hallelujah! Finally, Mother
nature gifted us with plenty
of snow recently, so we can
enjoy the season.
Snowmobile and ski season
have started! You can’t wash
off the frozen smile from
winter lovers’ faces! No
doubt, they couldn’t wait any
longer. But snowy days also
involve slippery roads and -
unfortunately- many acci-
dents as well. However, TV
channels constantly warn us
of the dangerous road condi-
tions and fill us with safety
advice, the majority of peo-
ple tend to ignore these cau-
tions. Unfortunately, many
drivers make winter driving
worse than it should be
because they make common
errors such as driving too fast
and following too closely,
that increases their chances
of getting in a crash.
According to safewinter-
roads.org “more than
116,000 Americans are
injured and over 1,300 are
killed in vehicle crashes on
snowy, slushy or icy pave-
ment every winter”. Last
year I was one of them. I had
a car accident. I can say it
was a wakeup call for me. I
overestimated not only my
vehicle’s ability to handle
winter weather conditions
but also my driving ability.
We headed to an afternoon
activity after a snowy day:
me & my husband & our
children. I was the driver. As
we were chit-chatting in the
car, amazed by the beauty of
the view, I tended to believe
it was average driving condi-
tions. Unfortunately, the
curvy road quickly woke me
up from my beauty sleep. My
car slipped on black ice and
headed to the side of the
road. I quickly turned the

When I saw a pickup truck
with an attached slow plow
coming straight at me, I
turned the wheels back. The

er/form fillers (PM/FFs, for
short) store passwords and
your other data in encrypted
files (or some other highly
secure format) on your hard
drive and/or in the cloud. No
one, other than the holder or
holders of the PM/FF's mas-
ter password, can access the
information — not even the
application's publishers.
The PM/FF I use currently
an evergreen and thankfully
a huge pile of snow in front
of it decreased our speed and
the damage. We all got out of
the car safely. Among a cou-
ple dents, we all got an
instructive life lesson. I, per-
sonally, had to acknowledge
sadly I couldn’t manage
these situations. Since then, I
take my driving more seri-
ously on these days and I
don’t have to force myself to
drive more carefully.
A year later, I sadly noticed
there are still many irrespon-
sible drivers on the roads.
The day after our first snow-
storm this year, I had to
drive. Snow plows were still
on roads, working on remov-
ing the snow and ice from
outdoor surfaces. When the
road reached to a 4-way stop
intersection, I stopped.
Across the road there was
already another car covered
by snow with only a tiny

Alzheimer's disease can trig-
ger fear, anxiety, or even

the initial signs in their loved
one. What’s more, if the
afflicted senior already has
impaired judgment or mem-
ory loss from the disease, it
may already be too late for a
rational, cohesive conversa-
tion about it. In any case, it’s
wise to approach the topic
with great sensitivity and
care.

the Doctor

fear and paranoia. Instead, it
is better to be open about it,
while reassuring your loved
one that it is a fairly com-
mon brain illness.
Caregivers should tell him
or her that there is nothing
that could have been done to
prevent it, but there are
things that can help slow the
disease and you will do your
best to help. Also, allay any
fear of abandonment. While

Like many of us, reader
Johnny Berger finds repeti-
tive computing tasks, such as
filling out online forms, tire-
some. "As I browse different
websites, I'm often required
to fill in the same data over
and over — my email
address, for example. "Is
there a way to automate this
tedious process?"
Absolutely!
Perhaps the best, safest, and
simplest answer is to use an
automated form filler, such
as those built into the better
password-management
applications. These tools can
automatically detect fill-in-
the-blank forms on the Web
and in some desktop apps.
They'll enter not just pass-
words, but also almost any
other information you want:
for example, your full name,
email address, physical
address, phone number,
bank-card numbers, security
answers (e.g., "mother's
maiden name"), and so on.
In many cases, the process is
completely automatic. When
you arrive on a page that
contains a form, the app
automatically populates
every blank area for which it
has the appropriate informa-
tion. (You can provide this
information both when you
setup the software and as you
go.) Once you've reviewed
the inserted data to make
sure it's correct, you simply
submit the form in the nor-

During their winter dorman-
cy (sometimes called bruma-
tion, as opposed to mam-
malian hibernation), they
absorb oxygen from the
water through an orifice
called the cloaca. Eastern
painted turtles can live for
extended periods without
oxygen, and their heartbeats
can slow to as few as one
beat every 8-10 minutes.
They do move around,
though. Turtle expert and
author David Carroll, who
has observed turtles for 60
years, says, “I’ve seen a spot-
ted turtle moving under ice
that’s as clear as a window.
It’s a curious thing, because
they like to be dug in to
avoid otters and other preda-
tors.” Snapping turtles also
are spotted moving beneath
the ice, he says. “They can
move in water that’s an eye-
lash above freezing.”
Another creature moving in
the wintry water is the
Eastern red-spotted newt.
The orange salamanders we
see in damp woodlands and
on wet roads in summer are
the juvenile stage of this
amphibian. Red-spotted
newts spend their first year in
the water as larvae, using
gills to breathe. For the next
few years they are terrestrial,
breathing through lungs and
surviving winter by hibernat-
ing under leaves, rocks, and
logs. As adults, they return to
the water and turn olive
green, with tiny black dots
and a row of larger red-
orange spots. Newts spend
the winter resting on the lake
bottom, swimming in short
bursts, dining on insect lar-
vae, and sometimes moving
up to swallow a trapped air
bubble just beneath the ice. If
you find an ice-free area, you
might see a bunch of them.
Aggregations of newts
around holes in the ice in
springtime have been known
to contain up to 100 individ-
uals.
Frogs rest on the bottom of
the pond, partially covered
by leaf litter and mud. They
don’t burrow in completely,
or they’d suffocate. Even
with drastically reduced
metabolism, they need some
oxygen. They get it by
absorbing it through their
skin. Because of the skin’s
large surface area, they man-
age to take up enough oxy-
gen and eliminate enough
carbon dioxide to survive.
Adult bullfrogs and green
frogs sometimes swim slow-
ly beneath the ice. In their
tadpole stage, bullfrogs are
active all winter. Bullfrogs
take two or three years to
mature, so tadpoles can be
fairly large—a substantial
meal for a crayfish, trout, or
red-spotted newt.
There is plenty of life on a
miniature scale, too.
Dragonflies, mayflies, cad-
disflies, stoneflies, and other
insects overwinter as
nymphs, floating along or
crawling on rocks. Whirligig

beetles swim slowly or crawl
on the underside of the ice.
There are gazillions of tiny
crustaceans such as fairy
shrimp, freshwater shrimp,
water fleas, cyclops, and
copepods, which feed on
dying algae and plant matter.
I can picture Thoreau
stretched out on the ice of
Walden Pond, checking out
what’s going on beneath.
I’ve done the same, usually
seeing only tiny white bub-
bles. But I know that whether
I see it or not, the “parlor of
the fishes” is teeming with
life.

Had a unicorn pranced
across the trail in front of me,
I wouldn’t have been sur-
prised.
It was one of those sparkly
winter days, when snow
drapes fir trees and glints
across the landscape. I was at
the top of Cannon Mountain
in New Hampshire’s
Franconia Notch, and an
undercast made it seem as if
the summit were a sunny
island above a sea of clouds.
To add to the wonder, there
was something magical hap-
pening in the sky, which
shimmered with color and
light.

cirrus clouds high in the sky.
These clouds are composed
of a multitude of tiny ice
crystals and tend to be thin
enough that the sky appears
mostly clear – as it did that
day at the top of the moun-

refracts, a halo – or full ring
of light – appears around the
sun.
A sundog – more scientifi-
cally known as a parhelion –
appears like a glowing spot
to one or both sides of the
sun, about where the 3 and 9
are oriented on an analog
clock face. Sundogs form
when those hexagonal ice
crystals are oriented so their
broad sides are horizontal as
they fall through the sky.
They’re most easily spotted
when the sun is close to the
horizon. Sundogs can be
mostly white or have a rain-
bow of colors, with red clos-
est to the sun and blue on the
outside.
“Really, the higher the den-

I have been asked several
times if Tom Brady will
retire or not after the
Superbowl, now over. The
answer is no. He will be
playing again next year. I
I snuck into the stadium’s
locker room. Luckily sever-
al guys like cats and while
being pated by several of the
Pats, I listened to several
conversations. Brady will
not retire this year and will
play until he is 45 barring no
serious injuries or fall of in
his abilities as quarterback. I
also found it interesting to
learn about Gronk, he is only
50/50 on retiring, after play-
ing hurt for most of the year,
in the end he proved his
value. A healthy Gronk
would be worth having next
year. My suggestion for now
is to enjoy the parade and all
the fanfare for winning the
Superbowl, it won’t be long
before the draft and a new
season, I can’t wait to see
them defend their champi-
onship and my pets yelling at

male pet yells at the TV and

al sky phenomena on display
that day, including two com-
monly seen in winter: sun-
dogs, where mock suns flank
the real sun, and a 22-degree
halo. Both derive their magic
from simple ice crystals.
The coldest season, it turns
out, is a great time to look for
wonder in the sky.
“Halos and sundogs are
commonly seen in the winter,
as light from the sun passes
through ice crystals,” said
Tom Padham, a meteorolo-
gist and education specialist
with the Mount Washington
Observatory. This is due not
only to the fact that there are
more ice crystals present dur-
ing the cold of winter, but
also because of the low angle
of the sun.
These ice crystals are tiny
bits of frozen water that
remain suspended in the
atmosphere. As Padham
explains it, the hexagonal
crystals form when tempera-
tures high in the sky are
super cold – generally below
-22 degrees Fahrenheit.
When the sun’s light passes
through the crystals, it is
refracted. Light rays are bent
twice – once entering
through one side of the crys-
tal, and again exiting through

I am writing in regard to NH
House Bill 296-FN, a bill rel-
ative to animal waste
cleanup in state forests and
state parks introduced by
Rep. Harrington, Strafford
District 3. If passed, this bill
would require anyone bring-
ing an animal into a state
park or state forest to "clean
up or remove all solid waste
produced by such animal"
(i.e., manure).
As one who rides horseback
and walks goats and dogs at
Fox State Forest in
Hillsborough and other state-
owned lands, the proposed
bill concerns me. While I
agree it is desirable to clean
up animal dung whenever
and wherever possible, there
are times it is impractical and
even dangerous to do so.
Dog poo is easy to scoop and
bag (though the plastic bags
themselves virtually encase
the poo for eternity in a land-
fill somewhere), horse and
especially goat manure
(which is like that of white-
tailed deer) is not.
The bill appears to me to be a
solution in search of a prob-
lem. Of the hundreds of
miles of trails on state land in
NH, a small percentage is
actually ridden by horseback
riders. In fact, the equestrian
community would like to see
more trails and facilities for
trail riding. The NH Horse
Council and others have
been working closely with
the Division of Forests &
Lands for many years to
make that happen. To his
credit, Director Bryce has
been supportive but funding
and staff for planning, design
and construction are nearly
non-existent.
Allow me to offer a bit of
background... While few in
number, equestrians churn a
huge amount of money
through the local economy.
Demographically, we are
overwhelmingly women "of
a certain age." As our fami-
lies will testify, most of us
care more about our animals
than near anything else and
we are damn-near broke
physically, spiritually and
monetarily trying to keep
them all healthy and happy.
Our dollars flow through and
support a host of small busi-
nesses, including:
- Farriers
- Veterinarians
- Farm owners & boarding
facilities
- Hay growers
- Feed stores
- Equipment operators
(mowing, seeding, fertilizer,
bush-hogging, fencing, exca-
vation)
- Tack shops
- Barn builders
- Camps & campgrounds
- Truck and trailer dealer-
ships, and more.

is, there are just fewer and
fewer safe places to ride our
horses.
The bill as written is imprac-
tical because, other than at
parking lots, it's unenforce-
able. The Division of
Forests & Lands doesn't have
the staff or personnel to mon-
itor every mile of trail on
state land. Even if a hiker
were to photograph or video-
tape an equestrian, the
department doesn't have the
time or means of tracking
that rider down to cite them.
The agency has more press-
ing matters with which to
attend. In all likelihood, it
would cost more in terms of
staff time etc. for the

Lands to hunt down, process
and collect fines than would
be generated thereby placing
an even bigger burden on an
