Design Document: Design of Substructure and Foundation
Comments on Substructure and Foundation:
1. Drg No. MJB/76+310/SUB/ABUT-03-R1: There are errors in notes 5
and 6 which may be reviewed and amended.
2. Drg No. MJB/76+310/SUB/SUP/02-R1: There are errors in notes 5
and 6 which may be reviewed and amended. Outline of pier may be
shown in the plan of pile cap.
3. Drg No. MJB/76+310/SUB/PIER-02: Note 2 states that Tar paper
bearing has been proposed whereas note 9 states that pedestal
thickness shall be finalized after the bearing design. The design
document shows elastomeric bearing. Type of bearing must be
finalized and the notes may be reviewed and amended accordingly.
. IRC:6:2016 may be referred in design in place of IRC:6-2014.
. In chapter-i5 of design note, value of response reduction factor has
been taken as 2.5. As per note-(iii) of Table-20 of IRC:6, value of “R”
may be taken as 1.0 for RCC substructure if elastomeric bearings are

Lof2used. Design of substructure and foundation may be reviewed
accordingly.
6. As per clause 219.9 of IRC:6-2016, a separate system of arrestor
control in both directions may be provided to cater to seismic forces on
the elastomeric bearings. So, Longitudinal and transverse seismic
stoppers may be provided and Dimension/reinforcement details of
seismic stoppers and their locations may be shown in the drawings.
7, Initial load test may be carried out before casting of working piles to
verify the pile capacity used in design.
8. Routine load test may be carried out on working piles before casting
the pile cap as per requirement of clause 709.2.4 of IRC:78-2014.
