Classroom Management Philosophy

According to Marzano and Marzano (2003), “…one of the classroom teacher's most

important jobs is managing the classroom effectively.” Efficient classroom management creates

opportunities for students to learn, grow, and meet their educational goals. One key to ensuring

that classroom management runs smoothly is to properly engage all students. A teacher must

work to plan and implement strategies to accommodate and differentiate instruction, materials,

and activities so students are plugged into the learning community. Engaged students will

achieve great things, have meaningful learning experiences, and apply their knowledge in the

future.

I plan to establish procedures, routines, and behavioral expectations in my future

classroom from day one. In order to successfully carry out these crucial components to the

learning community, students must be actively involved. For instance, students can help me

create our classroom rules. When they help create the classroom rules, they will take more

ownership of their behaviors. Additionally, procedures, routines, and expectations should be

clearly visible for students at all times and positively reinforced through teacher modeling. Also,

“…the teacher must acknowledge students' behavior, reinforcing acceptable behavior and

providing negative consequences for unacceptable behavior” (Marzano & Marzano, 2003).

Effective classroom management ensures that all students needs are being met in fair and

equitable ways. Strategies should be intentionally planned and incorporated throughout the day

so that all students are given expectations and opportunities to be successful. Additionally, I

plan to set educational goals with my students. Setting goals with my students requires me to

have meaningful conversations that assist them in building upon their individual strengths and

weaknesses. Then, I have to give them the tools necessary to help them meet their educational

goals. Diversity plays such a major role in our world today. I want this diversity to be

celebrated in our learning community through actively involving my students’ families. This

begins with effective communication. Also, families can be encouraged to participate in

activities like reading to class and family projects that incorporate their culture.
