Section A
[28 Marks]
Answer all questions.

1 A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the volume,
V, of pressed syringe and pressure, P. The apparatus set-up for the experiment is shown
in Diagram 1.0.The reading of the Bourdon gauge when the piston of the syringe pressed
to 8.0 cm3 is 1.25 Pa.

Diagram 1.0

The piston of the syringe is pressed.

Diagram 1.1 shows the reading of the bourdon gauge, P, when the volume of the
compressed air, V= 5.0 cm3.
The experiment is repeated with the air compressed to 4.0 cm3, 3.0 cm3, 2.0 cm3 and 1.0
cm3. The corresponding readings of bourdon gauge are shown in Diagram 1.1, 1.2, 1.3,
1.4 and 1.5.

2 A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the pressure
in liquid, P and depth, h of liquid X. The result of the experiment is shown in the graph
pressure, P against depth, h as in Diagram 2.1.

7
a) Based on the graph as shown in Diagram 2.1:

i) What happen to P when h increase?

8
………………………………………………………………………………….
[1 mark]

ii) Determine the value of P when h= 0.53 m.

Show on the graph, how you determine the value of P.

P = ……………………………
[3 marks]

b) The pressure in liquid P, is given by the formula,

P=hρg
Where ρ is density of liquid and g is gravity.

i) Calculate the gradient of graph P against h. Show on the graph how you
determine the gradient of graph.

[3 marks]

ii) By using the formula P = hρg and the value obtained in b (i). Calculate the
density of liquid X, ρ. Given g = 9.8 N kg-1.

[2 marks]

iii) By using the formula P = hρg and the value of ρ in b (ii), find the pressure in
liquid X at 2 m depth.
