SUMMARY

This report was to determinant ISVNU students’ choice of the college major. It also provides the
reason why they chose current major and their plan after graduation.
This investigation was done by questionnaires.
The main findings were that students tend to choose International Business (IB). Most of them
are affected by job opportunities. After graduation, the proportion of people who decide work for
the government and work for the foreign company account for the same percentage.
It was concluded that students are interested in the problem of employment after graduation
which has a large effect on the chosen field of study and their plans in the future.
The recommendations are that students should choose the major not only base on the job
opportunity, but they also consider their capacity to perform the work and the level of their
favorite for the career.

INTRODUCTION

1. Purpose

The purpose of this report is to specify the reasons for student’s choice of their current academic
major and describe their plans after graduation with relevance to their training.
This information collecting from my report will be sent to Office of Academic Affairs and it is
possibly helpful for the student having the intent to study at VNU-IS in the future.

2. Scope
The report examines the students who are studying three major (AC, IB, MIS) at International
School – Vietnam National University. Questionnaires were delivered to participants who were
selected at random on 3 classes.

3. Methodology

The information for this report was gathered from statistics of students’ choices and research of
organizations, doctors, and masters.

were collected by the researcher.

Accounting, Analysis, and Auditing (AC)

Examining the data, it can be seen that the number of students chooses IB major accounts for the
highest percentage (46%).The students of MIS is approximately equal to students of AC (26%
and 28%). For the result of Survey on the trend of choosing career of young people today 2013
(GMO Runsystem Joint Stock Company), Economics major is still the first option chosen by
many young people. Recently, the state Vietnam's economy is growing day by day now on. For
the most part, that this field is easy to apply and has many chances of promotion.

Page 7

However, the current reality shows that the labor force in this industry is also gradually becoming
overloaded, the supply becomes more abundant. Thus, the demand for recruitment is not as loud
as before, but many people still do not recognize the reality. They are willing to give up the
industry they dream and entering the “hot” profession. This makes it difficult to apply in the
future because the supply exceeds the demand.

Job opportunity 36%

Personal interest 16%

Parent's decision 20%

0% 5% 10% 15% 20% 25% 30% 35% 40%

Our calculations show that the most influential factor is the job opportunities (36%). Besides,
students also consider elements of individual ability (24%) or follow parent’s decision (20%)
which is suitable for their socio-economic background. Personal interest (16%) and school
reputation (4%) are not the elements having important impacts on students’ decision. Therefore,
students really focus on the output of the major and want to apply for a good job with high salary
living themselves. This is the common psychology of people.

It can be seen from the graph that the majority of students choose to apply for a job for both
government and foreign companies (26%). Nevertheless, there are plenty of respondents who
said that they haven’t had any plans for themselves yet (24%).There is a small number of students
chose study higher level (16%) and 8 percent of students decided to open their own company.
According to the analysis of the University of California, Irvine in UC Irvine Graduating Senior
Surveys 2017 over 60% of students planned to work right after graduation and work full-time in
for-profit companies in California. One-fifth of students each survey planned to continue their
education directly after graduation. It shows that students tend to find a job, earn money and only
has a small number of them want to keep on their study.

Accounting, Analysis, and Auditing (AC)

The majority of students satisfied with their decision (64%) especially students of IB (32%).
However, there still have a small number of them is not happy with their decision (32%). The
reasons why students did not satisfy might come from the study process (they realize they are not
suitable for that major) or can be from the study condition (the school does not meet needs of
students).

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

On the basis of information in this report, it can be concluded that students tend to choose
Economics major because it brings back high job opportunities. Most of the students want to
apply for a job right after graduation.
From these conclusions, identifying the most suitable job is essential. Thus, students should think
carefully and consider every aspect such as personal characteristics, salary, abilities,
responsibility, and passion.
This is the first stage helping students choosing the right job. A person without directions and
clear goals will never achieve great success in life.
