Diary Entry

“In today’s session I leant about ethics being the moral study of standards of conduct which
administer moral judgment of a man, religion, and so forth. We were likewise told about it
viewed as science or morality. The ethical ideas does not change as one's desire and furthermore
it inspires change. We additionally talked about spirituality being different in relation to religion.
Discussion on activities being ethical or unethical was additionally done on the principal day of
the workshop.
The question which was asked was How would it be advisable for me to carry on with my life?
The above question lead to-
1. What kind of individual would it be advisable for me to endeavor to turn into?
2. What values are imperative?
3. What principles/standards would it be advisable for me to live by?
It was likewise examined that ethics depends on standards of behavior which expresses that in all
cultures and societies it isn't right to kill or steal from somebody.
These models have grown additional time and originate from a variety of sources including-
1. Impact of religious written work and interpretations
2. Impact of philosophical thoughts
3. Impact of societal qualities
During the workshop it was discussed that many values changes with time and morality is based
upon an individual's perception.
Finally, at last the session closed with a case study which was based on professional ethics where
each study group needed to break down the case on the dilemma which Janet needed to confront
which was whether to work for the tobacco organization pitching tobacco to young boys and
making them addictive of the item which was against her values and ethics or work for the
organization and disregard her moral qualities. Few questions were identified related with the
case and were additionally asked amid the workshop. Some of them being-
1. What should Janet do?
2. What were the various advertising methods adopted by the tobacco organization?

The second day started with Gandhiji’s seven dangers to human values-
1. Wealth without work
2. Pleasure with conscience
3. Knowledge without character
4. Business without ethics
5. Science without humanity
6. Religion without sacrifice
7. Politics without principle
It was also discussed that morality, ethics, virtues and values are different but can be
interchangeably used and leadership and organizational culture are very important in an
organization.
Some of the topics which were discussed on the second day of the workshop were-
 Honesty and integrity- It was explained by giving the example of Warren Buffet telling
a group of students about the importance of honesty and integrity in real life and if we
live life with honesty and integrity we will live a peaceful life and set standards for your
coworkers.
 Governance- Intentional exercise of power to accomplish goals
 Integrity- Behavior violating moral values.
 Law VS Ethics- Being ethical is not the same as following Law and also many actions
are ethical but Lawful. Example- Robin Hood.
 Branches of Ethics- Meta Ethics (Concepts of ethics)
Normative Ethics (How to determine ethical values)
Applied Ethics (Use of values)
 Ethical Theories-
1. Utlitarian Theory- Rightness of actions is determined by the good consequences
they produce and an action is considered right if it produces greatest good for
greatest number of people.
2. Deontology- Believes certain actions are right because of the nature of these
actions or the rules which they follow. It also expresses moral rights from
individuals’ point of view instead of society’s.
3. Rights Theory- People have rights which in turn decide their duties. It also let
people follow actions without others interference.
4. Fairness Approach- The main idea behind this theory is that all humans should be
treated equally
5. Virtue Approach- It is defined as a character trait that manifests in habitual
actions. The main question which arises in this theory is What kind of person will
I become if I do this?
List of Virtues- Honesty, Coverage and Compassion
Benevolence, Generosity, Tolerance (it should not be used)
Fidelity (Loyalty), Self-Control (Missing in today’s era because
of self-interest).
6. Moral Absolutism- Some people believe that there is only one right perspective.
Religious Fanaticism- Seen in religious code of conduct observed without raising
any question
Secular Perspective- Things that are absolutely true irrespective of contextual
differences.
7. Moral Pluralism- Human values are good but can come in conflict in some
situation.
8. Ethical Egoism- It has two parts- a) Individual (Individual pursue own interest)
b) Universal (People follow own interest)
9. Moral Relativism- Differences in ethical values among different cultures.
 Issue of Morality- A person with rational thinking will face many situations in his/her
professional life about ethicality of his/actions.
Micro Ethical Issues- Small issues faced in day to day functions.
Macro Ethical Issues- Societal problems, ignored until they become gigantic.

One of the most important things which was told to us that Reporting should always be
done because it safeguards you.

One case study which was discussed on the second day of the workshop was about how a
person devoted his life for his job and got sick but instead of being praised by the
employer for his contribution he was fired because he was of no use for him. This case
study showed the unethical behavior of the employer towards the employee. Also, the
ethical ways were also discussed which were-
1. Giving him a desk job
2. Giving him pension.

On the final day the first topic which was discussed was Professional Ethics which is a
social calling ensuring vocation which provides one with means to earn one’s livelihood.

Main Characteristics-
a) Take oath of expected social duties.
b) Provide public services with social responsibility towards community.

Later the three ethical pillars were also discussed which were-
a) Ethical Individual (Integrity, Play Fair, etc.)
b) Ethical Leadership (Role Modeling, Rewarding Ethical Behavior)
c) Organizations Structures and Systems (Corporate Culture, Code of Ethics)
Later on, in the workshop discussion on ethics on various professions and fields was also
done.
Ethics in Legal Profession- Override personal morals for greater good.
Ethics in Media- It has a wide range of instruments used to tell information related to
education and entertainment.
Yellow Journalism- Relying upon sensational and exaggerated information to sell
newspaper.

Sales and Marketing- a) Unethical advertisement

c) Wrong disclosure of information
d) Lack of openness in dealings.
Production and Operation- a) Unwanted side effects.
b) Environmental apathy.
c) Animal right and animal testing.
