Tutorial 3 SSF1093: Mean and standard deviation

1. The ages of all five employees at KFC are 47, 28, 55, 41, and 52 years old.
a. Determine the mean age of a worker employee and the standard deviation of age.
b. The values calculated in (a) are known as parameters or statistics?

2. A sample of 50 students was randomly selected in a school to find out ‘How much time do
you need to complete a set of 10 questions exercise?’ The summary of the investigation is
presented in a frequency distribution table as follows:

Time Taken No of students

8 9
12 10
15 11
20 13
35 7

a. What is the variable of interest in this study?

b. Identify the level of measurement for the identified variable.
c. Briefly explain what the value of 7 indicates in the second row.
d. Determine the mean and standard deviation values in this study.
e. What is the median value?
f. Determine the range.

3. Based on the data displayed in the following table, determine (i) the average wage paid per
employee in a week? (ii) the median wage paid per week.

Wage per week (RM) 8 7 6 5 4 3

No of employees 20 10 50 30 20 70

4. According to the Department of Statistics, the annual salary of a worker in Penang was
estimated as RM35748. Suppose the median annual salary for a worker in this group was
RM31369. Do you think that the distribution of salary for this entire group is skewed? If
‘yes’, briefly explain why and at which direction. What is the more appropriate indicator for
central location to describe these data?
5. Two cricket teams kept records of the number of runs scored by their teams in 8 matches.
The scores are shown in the following table.

Team A 150 220 77 30 298 118 160 57

Team B 166 142 170 93 111 130 148 86

a. Find the mean and standard deviation of the scores for team A.

Suppose the mean and standard deviation for team B are 130.75 and 29.63 respectively.
b. State with a reason which team has the more consistent scores.

6. Data displayed in table below are from a survey. Determine (i) mean hourly wage; (ii)
median hourly wage interval; (iii) standard deviation of hourly wage

Hourly wage No of
interval employees
4-<6 20
6-<8 11
8-<10 24
10-<12 35
12-<14 10
