Evolution of Landforms and Lifeforms Vocabulary

For the following words, you must 1. write the word, 2. rewrite (copy) the given definition 3. put the definition into your own
words, and 4. draw a picture for the word. You may use the sheets provided or you can create your own format. You will
have a vocabulary quiz on all of the words on Tuesday, March 19th (Quiz grade). You WILL NOT be able to use your lists
on the vocab quiz.

1. Fossil: the preserved remains or traces of living things


2. Geologic Time Scale: a record of the geologic events and life forms in Earth’s
history
3. Index Fossil: fossils of widely distributed organisms that lived during only one short
period
4. Law of Superposition: the geologic principle that states that in horizontal layers of
sedimentary rock, each layer is older than the layer above it and younger than the
layer below it
5. Pangaea: a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early
Mesozoic eras
6. Relative Age: the age of rock compared to the ages of rock layers
7. Tectonic Plates: the Earth's lithosphere broken into major and minor plates of
continental or oceanic crust that are in constant motion due to their position above
the convection currents of the asthenosphere; responsible for geologic and
subsequent change over time

Lifeforms: - Due Thursday - 3/12

1. Evolution: the process by which all the different kinds of living things have changed over time
2. Artificial Selection: the intentional reproduction of individuals in a population that have
desirable traits
3. Natural Selection: the process where organisms better adapted to their environment
tend to survive and produce more offspring
4. Adaptation: becoming adjusted to new or changing conditions
5. Variation: a change or difference in condition
6. Offspring: the product of something, such as a person’s child
