Cho, Renee. “What You Can Do to Protect Biodiversity.” State of the Planet, Columbia

University, 18 June 2018, blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2011/04/30/what-you-can-do-to-protect-

biodiversity/.

In this article, Renee Cho discusses the topic of biodiversity and how humans’ mass

destruction of the world has affected not only the habitat of animals, but humans as well.

Then Cho writes that the human population size is expected to reach a total of 9 billion by

2050 and if we do not take care of our natural resources now, the biodiversity crisis will

only get worse. In Renee Cho’s article, she expresses the damage humans cause on

biodiversity and how this damage will get worse if we do no not pay attention to it now.

She also gives a list of reliable and respected ecolabels that help sustain our planet and she

also discusses how humans can do their part when buying goods - consumers can look for

different labels to help protect biodiversity. This article is valuable to my research because

its states facts on the rate in which biodiversity is disappearing and how we can do our

part to protect our planet. This article helps to answer important questions regarding my

capstone research, especially involving ways humans can help to protect biodiversity.

Christen, Kris. "Why Biodiversity Matters." Organisation for Economic Cooperation and

Development.the OECD Observer, no. 226, 2001, pp. 9-11. ProQuest,

https://search.proquest.com/docview/217467017?accountid=172748.

In this article, Kris Christen, who is a Environmental scientist, discussed and consulted one of

the world’s most renowned ecologist professors at Harvard, E. O Wilson, about why biodiversity

should matter to all of us. The author provides evidence by talking to an ecologist who has done

a numerous amount of work and research on biodiversity. While consulting the professor, he

discusses facts he has found through his years of work. In this academic journal, one can read a

discussion about biodiversity and the problems that lay ahead for our next generation but also

about what is going on to educate people and to help spread awareness. Work that is being done

to stop habitat loss, which is a main factor for biodiversity loss, is also discussed. This journal

would benefit me and my project studies because there data will be supplied from someone who

is a top researcher in the field of biodiversity. While reading through this source, I found a lot of

answers to many of the questions that will be researched for my capstone, such as how can one

educate someone on biodiversity and what happens if ignorance kills off most of our habitats on

earth?

L'Estrange, Sarah. “Are Wildlife Documentaries Contributing to Environmental Ignorance?” ABC

News, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 29 Aug. 2014,

www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/archived/animalpeople/wildlife-documentaries-

and-environmental-ignorance/5700890.

In this article written by Sarah L’Estrange, she argues that the reason for ignorance

towards biodiversity is due to the lack of knowledge that is often seen in wildlife

documentaries. L’Estrange quotes one of the worlds most well known conservationist, Dr.

Jane Goodall, in which she says “it is imperative for documentaries to reflect the idea that

nature is not pristine, is in peril” (5). This article explains how someone may think that

biodiversity is stable and is not something our country needs to worry about after

watching a wildlife documentary. However Sarah L’Estrange states that ignorance

towards this can be due to these movies (documentaries) which show our earth and as

untouched and the animals at peace, when actually it is the opposite and these

documentaries should show the good, the bad, and the evil so that viewers can see the

reality of what is happening in nature. This article provides evidence into why someone

might not care or understand why we need biodiversity. Also, it shows why people could

not be worried about this important issue because when they watch anything regarding our

wildlife, they think everything is okay, when it actually needs our attention.

Majeres, Julie. "The Politics of Biodiversity." The World & I, vol. 17, no. 12, 12, 2002, pp. 54-59.

ProQuest,https://search.proquest.com/docview/235889416?accountid=172748.ew/235889416?ac

countid=172748

In this article, Majeres discusses the political side of the loss of biodiversity and why humans

need it not just for our planet’s long term well-being, but also for our own health as well. She
4

states that by the year 2022, nearly 20 percent of all tropical species will be extinct and by

2042, 50 percent will be gone if we keep going at this rate. She also mentions wealthy nations

such as the United States want access to the greatest amount of organisms that are diverse

which are found in countries close to the equator. Julie Majeres article supports the reason

why we should save our rainforest and why it is important to us as a country. Biodiversity has

the ability to save our animals and the loss of biodiversity could also have a negative impact

on medicine, bioengineering, and health care. She writes that we need to save biodiversity

because the most diverse habitats are tropical and this is where we get all our rich products

used for medicine. Places like the jungle provide scientific, economic, health, and recreational

benefits. This article will provide valuable information for my project because it describes and

explains why we need biodiversity and that sustaining it does more than just keep our many

species safe, it help our country and mankind. This also answers the question why we should

care so much about the loss of biodiversity because this loss could potentially hurt our health

and could hurt the economy.

Watts, Jonathan. “One-Fifth of World's Back-Boned Animals Face Extinction, Study Warns.” The

Guardian, Guardian News and Media, 26 Oct. 2010,

www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/oct/26/iucn-vertebrates-extinction-nagoya.

In this article, Watts examines all that could happen and what has already happened due to the

loss of biodiversity. Throughout his article he references data from many sources such as the

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), case studies, and from top ecologist

and zoologist from around the world. He also reports that at least one species is added to the
5

endangered list every week which means it is at a risk for extinction. While reading this piece

by Jonathan Watts, one might get an idea about the rate in which our planet loses many

species and how it will play a huge role in our lives in years to come. He also states many

conservation efforts to support and keep our biodiversity safe. He quotes an ecologist named

Edward O. Wilson who states, “One small step up the red list is one giant leap towards mass

extinction” (6) which I believe says a lot about what could happen to our planet in the future.

This article can enhance my project due to the number of facts given from various sources and

the answers it will provide to the many questions proposed in my research project. This article

will supply answers about what is happening now in our world due to ignorance to wildlife

conservation.
