Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2018

About the Data
• Sample size – 3,209
• 7% of the sample was eliminated
• Data was evaluated by Greg Barker at Northern
Illinois University
– Data was “cleaned” to eliminate responses that were
deemed to be invalid. This was done by:
• Eliminating students who said “no” on the survey question
“Did you answer the questions on this survey honestly?”
• Eliminating students who responses were inconsistent in any
of the following sections: substance use or sexual activity.
Sub-Group Data
• Gender
– Raw number of respondents
• Female – 1,632 (51%)
• Male – 1,526 (48%)
• Nonbinary – 42 (1%)
• Transgender – 19 (1%)

• Grade Level
– Raw number of respondents
• 9th grade – 804 (25%)
• 10th grade – 871 (27%)
• 11th grade – 754 (24%)
• 12th grade – 771 (24%)

• Ethnicity
– NOTE: 1) Comparisons between race/ethnicity should be made with caution given the range in sample size of each
group. 2) US Census asks Latino/Hispanic as a question separate of race, so Latino represents students who
answered “YES” to “Are you Hispanic or Latino?”. However, these students then responded to the question about
racial identity, meaning that their responses are also included in the race responses. 3) Other includes students who
identified themselves as “American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Other” on
the race question (Q.5).
– Raw number of respondents
• White – 2,764 (86%)
• Black – 57 (2%)
• Asian – 436 (14%)
• Latino – 202 (6%)
• Other – 91 (3%)
Sub-Group Data
• Sexual Orientation
– NOTE: Sexual orientation was determined by how students answered
Question 6) Which of the following best describes you?. The heterosexual
data set is based on students who responded A) Heterosexual. The LGBTQ
data set is based on students who responded B)-E) Gay or Lesbian, Bisexual,
asexual and not sure.
– Raw number of respondents
• Heterosexual – 2,786 (87%)
• LGBTQ – 454 (14%)

• Psyc/SW Services
– Respondents were determined by how students answered Question 36) “In
the past 12 months, have you been treated by a psychiatrist/ psychologist/
social worker in or outside of school?”
– Raw number of respondents
• Have received Psyc/SW Services – 972 (31%)
• Have NOT received Psyc/SW Services – 2,2122 (69%)
