ABB in Malaysia
Driving a high digital future
ABB is a pioneering technology leader that is writing the future of industrial digitalization.
For more than four decades, ABB has been at the forefront, innovating digitally connected
and enabled industrial equipment and systems. We drive efficiency, safety and productivity in
utilities, industry, transport and infrastructure globally. With a heritage spanning more than
130 years, ABB operates in more than 100 countries and employs around 136,000 people.

ABB is the product of many acquisitions and mergers, but primarily the 1988 coming
together of ASEA of Sweden and Switzerland's BBC, formerly known as Brown Boveri,
two of the proudest and best known names in European electrical engineering history.

ABB Ltd, the ultimate parent company of the ABB Group, is listed on the SIX Swiss
Exchange in Zurich, the NASDAQ OMX in Stockholm and the NYSE in New York.

In Malaysia ABB's history in Malaysia began when the first power

generator was installed in 1904 by MFO Oerlikon which is now
part of the ABB Group. Today, most of ABB's operations are
consolidated under ABB Malaysia Sdn Bhd which was
established in 1973, with its head-office based in Subang
Jaya, Selangor.

Appendix B – Intervarsity Innovation Challenge Themes
The competition is based on a central theme of “Writing the Future of Digitalization
and Smart Technologies " and entries are invited for the following topics:

Topic 1: Smart Grid and city

Topic 2: Smart Industry and production

Topic 3: Smart Home and building

1. Smart Grid and City

Smart grid technology is a collection of existing and emerging technologies working
together to increase efficiency in production, transport and consumption; improve
reliability and economic operation; integrate renewable power into the grid; and
increase economic efficiency through electricity markets and consumer participation.

The most advanced smart grid technologies are in electrical transmission, and ABB is the
market and technology leader in many of them: Flexible Alternating Current
Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices enable existing transmission lines to deliver
maximum power, and help stabilize the grid with precise power control. High-voltage
direct current (HVDC) technology can deliver long-distance power with low losses on
land and under water, and connect asynchronous grids. Wide area monitoring systems
(WAMS) track critical system parameters to prevent development of dangerous
instability in the network. Supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA)
analyse real-time grid conditions, providing data for fast power adjustments. The
biggest changes are in the distribution network and for end users, especially commercial
and residential users.

ABB technologies for smart distribution networks and buildings include smart meters,
building automation systems, electric vehicle charging equipment, low-voltage solar
inverters, high-efficiency distribution transformers; substation and feeder automation.

2. Smart Industry and Production

As manufacturers across all industries face skills shortages, rising raw-material costs,
increased market competition and ever-stricter environmental regulations, ABB is
delivering the software, systems, services and digitally enabled hardware to enable
industry players lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

ABB Ability™ is a full portfolio of digital solutions for all industrial applications that
draws on ABB’s profound sector knowledge and 40 years of expertise in the digital
sector. From flexible robotics and drives to virtual commissioning and predictive
maintenance solutions, ABB Ability™ is enabling quantum leaps in the planning,
execution and management of manufacturing processes.

With ABB’s portfolio of digitally enabled products, manufacturers are writing a future
where risk is reduced, resources are utilized with maximum efficiency, humans are
spared dangerous and repetitive tasks, and cloud-driven connectivity drives new levels of
quality and performance.

3. Smart Home and Building
The commercial and industrial building market is a very dynamic environment. Building
owners and operators need to optimize energy consumption, decrease operational and
maintenance costs, so that building occupants benefit from comfort, security, and lower
utility bills. And with local and federal regulators introducing more energy codes and
standards, building automation has become more important than ever.

By using an ABB Ability™ such as Building Space®, we tailor a complete building

automation solution, connecting hundreds or even thousands of devices to work in
concert. Connecting the building to the smart grid could allow for even further control
and opportunities for efficiencies.

The usage of ABB Control System is also wide in commercial and industrial building
markets. ABB Control Systems has been developed in years to fulfill the needs of
monitoring the usage and control according to the needs of people.
