Introduction
This excel spreadsheet presents the revised and updated questions and coding for the EU Kids Online
survey questionnaire. It should be read in conjunction with the Research Toolkit produced by the EU
Kids Online network, available at www.eukidsonline.net. This toolkit explains the processes of sampling,
research ethics, survey administration, data preparation and analysis. This work has been produced by
combined efforts of this network of 33 national research teams. It was funded by the Better Internet for
Kids (originally, the Safer Internet Programme) of the European Commission. It is a work in progress,
and will be further updated periodically as required, including in response to feedback from researchers.
The survey questionnaire covers the ways in which children and young people engage with the internet
and online or digital technologies in their everyday lives, according to the model presented below. It has
been designed for children aged 9-16 years old. Survey administration is expected to be conducted by
in-home face-to-face interview for all questions that do not require sensitive questionning, and by pen-
and-paper or computer-assisted adminstration for questions that are sensitive (concerning risk,
parenting, and psychological characteristics of the child). The survey itself is presented over the
following excel worksheets (1) Access and use of the internet, (2) children's online activities and
digital skills, (3) their experiences of risk, harm and coping, (4) mediation of their internet use by
parents, teachers and peers, and (5) the child's everyday context and background
characteristics. The questions are a revised and updated version of our original 2010 questionnaire:
for convenience, the original questionnaire (and references to the 2014 Net Children Go Mobile
questionnaire) are presented on the right hand side of each worksheet. Note that on the project website
you can also find the original questionnaire translated into 25 languages.
In the main questionnaire, items defined as core questions are indicated with an R on the left hand
side. Other questions may be considered optional. Variables marked with a D are derived variables to
be coded as specificed (for full details, see the Technical Report and User Guide on the project
website). Some items may need careful translation or adaptation to local contexts. It is open to
researchers to add further questions or items as appropriate to their needs.
