Call for the 2019 “ Students Annual Essay

Wollo University School of Law is thrilled while announcing the First ‘Students Annual Essay

Competition’ to make it one of the flagship events of the School. The Essay competition will be

held continuously as of this year. The overarching objective of the annual essay competition is to

widened legal discourse opportunities for law school students and to advance their research skills.

Accordingly, the School decides to host annual essay competition as of this year/2019.

The theme of this year’s Competition

This year’s theme for the essay competition is “Ethiopia’s Transition to a Democratic System:

Dead-Ends and New-Openings”

Within the general theme you are asked to address the following sub-topics, but not limited to,

 The ongoing legal reforms and their possible use in the country’s transformation to a democratic system

 The impact of legal and institutional reforms towards the democratization process

 The upcoming National Election and its decisive role in the transition process

 The fate of ethnic based federalism: Marinating Status Quo?

 The need for crafting a government system which could bring sustainable peace and coexistence as a

nation

 A quest for panacea to the (pre)existing problems of the country

Submission Guidelines

Youths as leaders of the transition

Author eligibility

 All law students currently enrolled in Ethiopian Law Schools

 Both LLB and LLM students are eligible to apply

Criteria for submission

 Original text in English

 Maximum of 8,000 words, including footnotes

 Unpublished work

 Written in 12 points font, double-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins on all sides;

 Numbered in the upper right corner;

 Submitted in MS Word format;

 Include complete references

Introduced by a separate document that includes

 Title

 author’s name

 contact information (email, phone, University, Year of Study)

 unpublished status of the paper;

 University Identification Card

 Include an abstract summarizing the main question and main conclusions (maximum 200 words).

Deadline for submission of Essays: 1st June, 2019, until 5:00PM

Submissions are to be emailed to laws@wu.edu.et and engochayemane@gmail.com with “Students Essay

Competition/2019” as the email subject line.

Awards

In addition to certifications, modest cash or material rewards will be given to students whose papers ranked 1 st

to 3rd as per the decisions of independent reviewers.
