STUDENTS LEARNING THROUGH INVESTIGATORY PROJECTS

Student Investigatory Project is one of the components of the Tulong Dunong sa Kaunlaran
Program at Castor Alviar National High School. Primarily, the project intends to help students to
create the bigger picture of what innovation and discovery is all about. It allows an actual
interaction among members of the group. Likewise, awaken the students’ innate curiosity to
develop and improve ways of life and points to a need for meaningful understanding and
deliberate investigation.

This project is in line with the government’s aim founded the Philippine Constitution, under
Section 10, Art. XIV, which reads: Science and technology are essential for national development
and progress. The State shall give priority to research· and development, invention, innovation,
and their utilization; and to science and technology, education, training and services period. It
shall support indigenous, appropriate, and self-reliant scientific and technological capabilities,
and their application to the country's productive systems and national life."

In support of the education institution research and development, students in the basic
education are taught thoroughly of the knowledge pertaining to science and research.
Technological advancement starts from a small, indigenous research. Learning how to write is a
starting point of a research study.

The following are the research studies that have been made under the Tulong Dunong Program
in science:

*Waste Refrigerator Insulation as Wall and Ceiling Material

* Fruit Rind/Peelings in Wine Making was
*Weaving of Snake Plant
*Artemisia Essential Oil

However, no laboratory tests were conducted to fruit peelings as wine ingredients due to lack of payment
for laboratory analysis. Consequently, permission to take further test was not done. The group is
currently finishing the necessary write up on this.
To summarize the activities, four (4) projects were made. Two out of four projects were finished
but the write up is still on-going. The other two projects – fruit rind in wine making and artemisia
essential oil did not push through due to financial constraints.

Aside from formulation of the research problem, experimental part was made before the lecture
part. The group continue with the consultation of the research output. They are on the third part
or chapter of the research outline – methodology. While waiting for the editing of the first two
chapters.

Figure 1 shows the research write up which 50% completed.

In this activity, the
students have a
hands-on experience
on how to do the
setting of distillation

This activity enables them to be

aware of the different components or
parts of the distillation set-up.

Using gadgets, they can research on

procedures of distillation.
Students’ queries about how papers are produced, how dyes are made and how piña and
abaca are used nowadays have been answered. Experiencing how fibers are derived from
snake plants was a total achievement of the students. Now, the group are still working on the
research write-up.
