Bibliography of the works cited more than once in the Catalogue fileand elsewhere, with the
citation abbreviations in italics.
Many of these books, periodical articles and scores are hard to find, but large public and
university libraries own or can obtain most of them. I give only brief excerpts to show their
relevance to the categories of the Catalogue notes in which they are cited or to give some of
the flavor of the original writing.
Several of these works attempt to discuss all or most of the sonatas; I cite only the passages
which I have found most helpful, whether or not I agree with the authors’ conclusions. All
the authors seem to have something worthwhile to say, so I have concentrated on that aspect
of their work.
More complete bibliographies are contained in Sutcliffe and Willis, cited below.
When quoting from these works, I try to use the original language whenever possible. The
english translations, when available (in Chambure, Fadini & Doderer for example), are often
very inexact and frequently read more like a criticism of the original than a faithful rendition
-- traduttore=traditore.
