One of DeKalb County’s oldest African-American


communities is featured in a new exhibit at DeKalb
County History Center.
The Flat Rock community in southeast DeKalb
County is the subject of the history center’s new

partnership with the Flat Rock Archives and displays
artifacts gathered and preserved by the archives from
the 150-plus years of the community’s existence.
Flat Rock Archives is housed in the ancestral
home of Rev. T.A. Bryant Jr., who donated the
house, built by his father in 1917, to the archives to
house collections and tell the stories of the Flat Rock
community. The archives has been opened to the
public since 2006.

Melissa Forgey said the center created this exhibit
so DeKalb residents can learn the history of all parts
of the county.

The Flat Rock community was founded in 1822
with the birth of DeKalb County. The first post office
was built in 1837 and the area became Lithonia
in 1856. Following the Civil War, some African-
American families remained in Flat Rock, working
together to ensure success and safety in rural DeKalb
County.
The exhibit features photos of community
residents, and artifacts such as a church pew from
the historic Flat Rock Methodist Episcopal Church,
which was one of the cornerstones of the community.
