The UK National Standards Body

• A Memorandum of Understanding is in
place between BSI and the British
government, establishing it as the
National Standards Body for the United
Kingdom.
• It is a business contract not a legal
requirement
• Contract is managed by the Business
Enterprise and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
• BSI was formed in 1901 and was the
world’s first National Standards Body.

• Responsibilities include:

• UK input to International and European standardization
• Regulatory and legal implications of standards
• Balanced stakeholder representation

• Activities include:
• Review membership of the committee
• Review currency of standards
• Votes on International and European standards
• Approves standards for publication

BSI Committee Member

• One of the most important aspects of being a BSI committee member is


communication

• This means acting as a link between the committee and the organisation they
represent, putting forward their views to the committee and making colleagues
in the industry aware of the activities in the committee

• BSI is looking for people with sector expertise to shape and develop the
standards of tomorrow – get involved!

and maintenance of British
