ABSTRACT
Background : Diarrhea is still the second largest caused of children under five's
mortality worldwide and malnutrition become the main cause. Some studies said that
children with malnutrition have a tendency to get diarrhea more often with more
severe and prolonged duration than normal children. And it makes malnutrition and
diarrhea such a vicious circle.
Objective : To investigate the correlation between nutritional status and length of stay
under five children with diarrhea
Methods : A cross sectional study was conducted from August 2018 to December 2018
using the consecutive sampling methods. The subjects were children aged 1-5 years
old hospitalized for diarrhea at Wangaya Hospital Denpasar. The characteristic of
subject such as gender, children age, birth weight, exclusive breastfeeding status,
immunization status, degree of dehydration, mother’s employment, and economic
factor.
Result : Among 42 subjects, mostly in children aged 12-24 months was 52.4%. Mostly
subjects was found in boys (57.1%). Nutritional status was significantly correlates with
length of stay under five children (p=0.001 ; CI 95%=0.34). prevalence ratio was 5.6
which shows wasting nutritional status is a risk factor for longer length of stay.
Nutritional status also has a significant correlation with the duration of diarrhea
(p=0.000).
Conclusion : There is a significant correlation between wasting nutritional status with
the longer length of stay in under five children. There is also a significant correlation
between wasting nutritional status with the longer duration of diarrhea in under five
children.
