Week/Date:______________________

I. Learning Competency
General Objective: Conduct investigation on specialized structures of
plants given varying environmental conditions:
light, water, temperature, and soil type (S4 LT- II-e-f-
10)
Specific Objective/s :
1. Know the effects of water on plant growth.
2. Investigate and interpret the data on the effect of
water on plant growth
3. Show importance to plants

II. Content:
“The Effect of Soil type on Plant Growth”

Key Concept/s:
 Plants depend on soil to survive. This is because soil is a direct
source of food and water for the plant. The plant gets its food
from the soil by planting its roots in the soil. After the plants roots
have grown in the soil, the plant can obtain nutrients from the soil.

A. Materials:
3 potted plants each planted on 3 different types of soil
Water
Sunlight
Activity envelop
Light
Pentel pen
Experiment notebook

B. References:
Science 4 CG

C. Process Skills:
interpreting data, inferring, comparing, communicating and
controlling variables

D. Value Integration:
Cooperation

III. Learning Tasks:

A. Engagement:
1. Review on the different types of soil (sandy, clay, and loamy)
 Sandy soil – is loose, rough, and gritty. It can hold little
water.
 Clay soil- can hold many nutrients, but will not allow enough
water and air to pass through.
 Loamy soil – is the best soil type for plants
2. Show pupils 3 potted plants with different soil type.
3. Let them observe each plant.
4. Ask: Which plant used sandy? clay? loamy?

B. Exploration:
1. Grouping of Pupils
2. Setting of Standards for Group Work
3. Distributing the activity cards
4. Activity Proper
5. Reporting

C. Explanation:
1. What does the table tells us? (It tells us the effect of soil type on the
growth of plants.)
2. What type of soil in in Set up A? B? C? ( Set up A is loam, B is sand,
and C is clay.)
3. What differences were observed on the growth of plants as to their
height on the 3 set ups? (answers may vary depending on the
growth of plants on each set up)
4. What differences were observed on the growth of plants as to their
leaves’ color on the 3 set ups? ( answers may vary depending on the
growth of plants on each set up)
5. What differences were observed on the growth of plants as to their
condition on the 3 set ups? (answers may vary depending on the
growth of plants on each set up)
6. Which of the three types of soil did the plants grow best? least?
(answers may vary depending on the growth of plants on each set
up)

D. Elaboration:
1. Based on the observations as reflected on the table, what conclusion
can be drawn? (Soil type had a great effect in the growth of plants.
Plants’ growth depend of the type on soil they were planted. )
2. Why is soil type important to plant growth? (Plants depend on soil to
survive. This is because soil is a direct source of food and water for
the plant. The plant gets its food from the soil by planting its roots
in the soil. After the plants roots have grown in the soil, the plant
can obtain nutrients from the soil.)
3. Why we need to conserve soil? (We need to conserve soil because
as the population grows, people will depend on soil for the growth of
food crops.)

E. Evaluation:
Direction: Choose the letter of the best answer.
1. Ella plans to plant a red rose plant in her garden. What type of
soil will she use in order to grow it?
A. She will use sandy soil.
B. She will use clay soil.
C. She will use loamy soil.
D. She will use a combination of sand and clay soil.
2. What type of soil is best for growing plants?
A. Gravel and sand
B. Clay soil
C. Sandy soil
D. Loam soil
3. Which plant can grow better in clay soil?
A. Daisy
B. Rose
C. Water lily
D. Mahogany tree
4. Angela tried many times to plant seeds of sunflower in her
garden but only failed because the seeds died in her clay soil
after a few days. What is the cause of the death of the seeds?
A. The type of soil is not suited to plant sunflower seed
in her garden.
B. The seeds used are defective.
C. The seeds are not suited to grow in warm environment.
D. The seeds are not ready to germinate.

The Effect of Water on Plant Growth

What you need:

9 mongo seeds (any fast germinating seed)
3 disposable drinking plastic cups
Loam soil
Clay soil
Sand soil
Water
Pentel pen
Ruler
Experiment notebook

What to do:
Part I – Preparation of Set Ups (to be done 10 days prior to the lesson)
1. Get 4 disposable drinking plastic cups and punch with same number of holes in
each cups.
2. Put the same amount of each type of soil in each plastic cups.
3. Plant 3 matured mongo seeds in each plastic cup.
4. Mark each cup with:
a. Set up A – Loam
b. Set up B – Sand
c. Set up C – Clay
5. Place them to an area where they can receive direct sunlight.
6. Water them every day.

Part II – Observation (to be done 5 days after the experimentation )

1. Get the set ups.
2. Observe and compare the differences among the plants.
3. Write your observations on the table below.
