brought to the shelter. In the shelter he did not do well and would shake
profusely in his kennel out of fear. Since coming in to foster care with Bella- HEALTH:

Hello! I am so excited to be bringing you this wonderful publica-
tion for Pet Parents, Pet Lovers, Rescuers and adopters.
My name is Sharon Cowell, publisher for the last 9 years of
Mama's Lil Guide Magazine, the print publication for moms.
I am a mama of 3 and fur mama of 3 dogs and 2cats. I have
been a foster mama and volunteer for the last 4 years for a local
rescue, and wanted to continue my mission to help advocate for
those who do not have a voice. I wanted to combine my
passion of publishing, community, rescues , local business and
animals to create a resourse that would not only help local
animals in need of a home or rescue, but provide education,
information, and events to those who may need it and who have
the same passion for animals.
Every business that advertises helps us to promote an animal in
need by highlighting them with a pic and bio and helps them to
get more exposure. Our publication is in print, online and on
facebook where we also highlight adoptables.
Each issue will feature local rescue groups and adoption events and a portion of our ad sales will be donated to a local
rescue or pet in need of medical services or special needs.
Enjoy our Spring issue and please contact us for more information about advertising and helping our our local rescues.

Brewscuits Beer Grain Dog Bones began in May 2013 when one of our rescue dogs, Tiki climbed up on the
picnic table and stole our spent beer grains after home brewing a batch of beer. A small business that began in our
home, moved to our garage, and now finally our own brick and mortar all began because of a rescue dog.
Brewscuits are all natural made from limited ingredients using the barley, oats, and rye from the beer brewing
process, local Alderfer eggs, flour, and flavor such as Nutty Novelties peanut butter, pumpkin, or sweet potato.
Brewscuits contain no salt, sugar, chemicals, or preservatives. We also work with about 15 local breweries and
distilleries now making dog biscuits for them.

Since moving to our new location at 100 Emlen Way Suite 118 Telford, PA we have expanded our line of Brewscuits quite a
bit. We now also have dehydrated grass-fed beef hearts, lung, and liver from Springfield PA. We also have dehy-
drated bison hearts, liver, and tongue from Hillside Bison Farms in Telford, PA. Our new location is our bakery and
also our retail store where we carry only USA made products and an abundance of local products such as local
jams and jellies, peanut butter, honey, goats milk products, alpaca products and so much more. You need to visit to
truly appreciate all of the local flare we carry. We have a lot of weekend activities planned for the spring/summer.
Check our Facebook page for information: https://www.facebook.com/brewscuits.

Staying true to our roots we firmly believe in rescuing and fostering dogs. We ourselves foster and rescue and also
take care of military family dogs while service members are deployed. We work with Mission K9 Rescue providing
care packages to our military dogs who are retiring and going to their forever homes. Locally we work with many,
many rescues including Dogtown, Mostly Muttz, American Bulldog Rescue, Diamonds in the Ruff, SPCA and many
more. We also work with Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown, PA who is honoring Brewscuits this year for our work
with the rescue at the Sixth Annual Tails and Ties Gala at Homewood Suites Center Valley, PA on April 13. Come
join the us at this formal but fun event to help raise money for the animals in need at Last Chance Ranch. Contact
LCR for more information. Hope to see you there and also come visit our store.

Jolie originally came to our shelter very scared
and shut down. She didn't trust people and was
overwhelmed in a kennel setting. BOY has that
changed! Sweet Jolie (affectionately known as
"Jojo" to staff and volunteers) is playful, affec-
tionate, outgoing, and eager to please. She
currently lives with another dog and has been
housed with both males and females. She looks

give her tons of love, lots of adventures, and a
forever place to curl up and call home. She
would do well in a home that already has another dog so she has a pup to bond with and learn the
tricks of the trade! We think that due to her reserved nature that small children might make her
nervous in a new home, but kids 12 and up would be ideal (and we do think in the future once she
is settled in with a family kids of any age would be fine!) She is a diamond in the "ruff" and we can't
wait to find the family that will help her SHINE! Her adoption fee is $295 and that includes she is
spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines as well as current with flea/tick treatments and
heart worm preventative.

CBD: Can I give it to my Pets and is it safe for them?
Is it safe to give my pet CBD? This question has been
asked a thousand times a day in the USA over the past
2 years. Yes, it is safe to give your pet CBD. It is a
compound that comes from the hemp plant which
appears to very successfully provide relief and help
manage chronic pain, anxiety and epilepsy. It won’t
work in every case but then neither do all pharmaceuti-
cal treatments (NSAID’s). The upside is if it does help,
as a holistic treatment rather than a pharmaceutical
one, there is little-to-no risk of overdose and any poten-
tial side effects are minimal. For pets where CBD
works, owners report a decrease in pain, improved
mobility, improved sleep patterns, increased appetite
and improved attitude, all leading to an overall
improvement in quality of life for their pets. Premium
CBD products are the key. Warner’s Best has several
quality products specifically designed for pets; CBD
Drops, treats and a powder supplement that is
combined with Glucosamine to help treat the pain of
degenerative joint disease and other chronic conditions.

Foster or Volunteer with a local rescue.

All expenses are paid for by the rescue, all you have to do is open up your home to an adoptable
pet until the rescue finds their furever home. The experience is one you will never forget and will bring you so much
joy knowing you helped.
If you can't foster, volunteer in other ways, all rescues need people to approve applications, do home checks,
transport dogs, take dogs for vet appointments, etc. Every little bit helps.
Check out some of the local rescues listed in the magazine, they can all use the help!

Host a fundraiser in your community for a local shelter, or get your kids
involved for a school project. Host a bake sale, a yard sale, or collect blankets, dog and cat food, and
other supplies and drop them off at your local SPCA, or AARK wildlife rehabilitation center in Chalfont.

Educate
We can all be part of the solution, by educating others on the importance of
spay and neutering their pets. Not only will it cut down on overcrowded
shelters and rescues by not filling them up with even more animals, but it helps
the general health of the animal.

Cat With History Of Litter Box Issues
What does this mean?
The cat has a history of urinating or defecating outside the litter box. This behavior could be inconsistent
meaning it happens once in a while or it could be consistent where it happens regularly.
What causes this type of behavior? This behavior is a normal behavior cats can display that happens for
one of two reasons and sometimes a combination. One reason is the cat has a medical issue such as a
Urinary Tract Infection. The second reason is the cat was/is under a higher level of anxiety.
What can you do? First recommendation for any animal with a behavior that is concerning is to take the
cat to your veterinarian. All cats adopted from the Dumb Friends League have been evaluated by veterinar-
ian staff to verify no medical cause. If the veterinarian clears the cat from any medical concerns then you
need to look at the environment the cat is living in daily.
How to change the behavior? Many cats that have a history of not using the litter box consistently just need
a change of environment. Moving a cat from one family to another, in some cases, is all it takes to change
this behavior. Although this is a normal behavior, for most cats this behavior is something that can be
reduced or resolved through anxiety relief.
Recommendations to resolve anxiety: The goal for a home environment is first to provide what the cat
needs (handouts on our website www.ddfl.org “Preventing Litter box Issues” and “Solving Litter box
Issues”) and then enrich the environment in similar ways we enrich our own lives. Cats thrive off of routine
but within that routine it is beneficial if they receive physical exercise and mental stimulation. We can
provide the cats mental needs through “Play Therapy” (also called structured play) and “Clicker Training”.
These two activities are covered in our handouts “Playing with Your Cat” and “Clicker Training for Cat”.
Why does this work? If we provide the correct environment for cats then they will not display any concern-
ing behaviors. By providing the correct number and cleanliness of litter boxes, mental stimulation, physical
exercise and doing proper introductions to other animals (handouts on our website
“Introducing Your Cat to Other Pets” or “Introducing Your Cat to Your Resident Cat”)
you will not be causing any anxiety, which causes
behavior issues.

Jade is a beautiful black female senior cat, about 12 years old. She has been through
a sad ordeal after her owner died suddenly, leaving her and her sisters homeless. Cat
Tales to the rescue! Jade is very friendly and hopes that her advanced age doesn't
keep people from wanting to adopt her. She has so much love to give, and all she
wants is a comfortable and loving home with a forever owner to be her lifelong
friend. Jade likes to engage in passive activities like sunbathing, sitting on a window-
sill and watching the outside world go by, and cuddling up in a friendly human's lap.
She even enjoys getting brushed! Jade needs to take one pill a day for her thyroid,

Jade
but it's no problem because she is used to it. Jade would prefer to live in a quieter
household rather than one with a lot of noisy activity. She just wants to be a feline
couch potato and smother her forever owner with cuddles, licks, and purrs.

Say hello to our pretty little Elo, a 1 to 2-year-old female brown tabby who came to
Cat Tales with her kittens. One character trait that makes Elo so special and intriguing
is that she carries an air of mystery about her, since we aren't sure about her history.
But as you can plainly see, Elo is one gorgeous kitty who has striking golden eyes.
She is hoping you will fall in love with those eyes as well as well as with her spunky,
playful personality. She is a very affectionate and energetic kitty, the kind of cat that
all cat lovers dream of having in their life. Elo sure knows how to pose for the camera,
whether she is sitting up or laying down. If you are looking for a forever pet compan-

Elo
ion who will boost your morale and make you feel happy 24/7, then Elo is your girl.
Look no further!

Look how cuddly and cuddled up our Cuddles is! She

blends into the background a little, but we can see her all bunched up and looking into
the camera with a look that asks, "Won't you please take me home and love me
forever? I promise to be a good kitty and cuddle up to you when you feel sad and
lonely." Cuddles was part of a trapping project, along with a large number of other
homeless kitties. We at Cat Tales hate to see kitties living without roofs over their
heads and without food in their bellies, so we're thrilled that a loving soul brought her

les
to us. We got her all of the necessary veterinary care, and now Cuddles is anxiously
waiting for the next chapter in her life to begin -- one that will be filled with friendship
and fun. Pets complete us, and Cuddles just knows that she will complete some lucky Cudd
person's life. All that person needs to do is walk through our door. Cuddles is a little
cautious at first, because she became used to living without any humans around. But
once she warms up to you, she is very friendly and affectionate. All she wants is to be an important addition to
someone's life. Won't you come in to Cat Tales and check her out?

Bella-Reed Pit Bull Rescue is named after Liss' first "born" Reed
and and her second pitty, Bella Blue, whom she adopted a few
years after rescuing Reed. Since then, she has fostered over 70
pit bulls in her home and foster "failed" three more. Hershey,
Pesto, and Nova Layne complete her pack of 5. She also has
started Bella-Reed Photography to help adoptable dogs gain
exposure and has taken all of the photos on their website.

Olivia came to us in November 2017 when we crossed paths with her in a local shelter
where she was heavily pregnant. A shelter is no place for a dog to have puppies so off
she came to Dog Town for a little quiet space to raise her brood....and she had quite the
brood! 12 puppies in total, all of whom are doing well and have moved onto their new
homes and lives.
Olivia developed a bit of a protective personality, which we think may be because of the
puppies she originally felt she had to protect. Now, she is queen of our daily play group,

Olivia
but is still exhibiting some of those behaviors.
Olivia requires slow introductions to new people, and does better when she is not in our
adoption center. We are looking for someone willing to put in the time to get to know
her, and to help her overcome her "stranger danger" fears once outside of our care.
When you know Olivia, you will have gained a loyal friend who regularly keeps you laughing. Her stumpy little legs and big
personality are so incredibly addictive. She loves to romp and play, and will sometimes even play bow her human friends. One
of her favorite things is engaging her human friends in a game of fetch, which should make for some fun backyard summer play
sessions. Sometimes, when she does "zoomies", we refer to her as Porky Pig (you have to see it to understand).
Olivia seems to be housetrained, and has earned herself a small mattress in her kennel. She sleeps like a queen with a bed full
of so many stuffed animals that the average toddler would be jealous.
Olivia lived with another dog in her former home, and has quite the posse of canine friends at Dog Town. We think she would
do great with another playful, friendly dog in a home. Email: adoptions@dogtown309.com

Clyde is a Chihuahua Mix who was surrendered to the local shelter when his family
unfortunately had to move away. He lived with young kids, which we might not neces-
sarily do again given his bossy chi personality, but good to know!
It seems he did well in his home, and may have some pain in his hind leg area, which
we will investigate further. He also seems to prefer women to men, but could do well
with either with slower intros.
Once Clyde warms up to you, he is sweet as can be. He loves to nibble on your fingers,

Clyde
beg for your food, and LOVES to be chased by other dogs.
Clyde would benefit from an owner who has chihuahua experience and will go slow and
do things on his terms. He could live with another dog who likes to play!

Enriching Your Dog’s Life
Your dog is a living, breathing animal that relies on you for almost literally everything (food, water, shelter, play
time, potty breaks…). Taking care of your dog’s physical and mental enrichment is part of being a dog owner.
Dogs that get enough mental and physical exercise are going to be happier and healthier. Happier and healthier
dogs are less likely to have behavioral issues down the road.
So what do we mean when we say enrichment? Enrichment is adding something to your dog’s life that makes it
more interesting. Some enrichment only takes a few minutes on your end, other is an hours-long endeavor for both
you and your dog.
Physical Enrichment
Many modern dogs spend all day at home, either alone or with a companion. Getting them enough
physical exercise is key to their physical health and mental well-being. Examples of good physical enrich-
ment include:
• Walking, running, and hiking. Let your dog stop and sniff. This gives you the two-for-one of letting your
dog engage his nose. This is mentally tiring for dogs!
• Fetch and Tug. Just a few minutes per day of these games is good for most dogs. Incorporate regular
breaks to keep your dog from getting too worked up.
• Swimming. This is a great way to tire dogs out that’s easier on their joints. Ensure that your local
watering hole allows dogs and is safe for swimming. Use a lifejacket for your dog to stay safe!
• Daycare. This isn’t for every owner OR every dog. Many dogs find daycare stressful or overwhelming,
and the cost alone keeps many owners away.
• Dog Sports. Look into things like scentwork or nosework, urban herding, rally obedience, flyball,
Barkour, Doggie Dancing, dock diving, or agility.

Mental Enrichment
Don’t neglect your dog’s brain! Engaging your dog’s brain is another great way to wear him out and keep
him sharp. Things like training or walking with time for sniffing (see above) can double as physical and
mental exercise.
• Puzzle Toys. There are tons of products out there, like CleverPet and the Kong Wobbler, that are made to
get your dog some mental and physical exercise while he earns his dinner.
• Search or Find-It Games. Hiding treats around your home or tossing them into long grass is a great way
to engage your dog’s sense of smell. This is pretty tiring for most dogs and very easy for you!
• Training. Aside from dog sports (see above), there are plenty of other ways to tire out your dog physi-
cally. Go to a group class or try writing out 15 fun or functional tricks for your dog to learn. Put them in a
jar and pull one out per week for daily 5-minute training sessions.

Create a Plan
Just the act of writing down a plan will help set it in motion. Come up
with a plan of 3 different physical or mental exercises that you’ll do for
your dog every day. This can be as simple as two ten-minute
walks per day plus a puzzle feeder while you’re at work. Try
to stick to this goal for 30 days. It’s a great way to bond with
your dog and create healthy habits for both of you!
