INTRODUCTION

A prismatic compass is a surveying instrument

which is extensively used for calculating bearings of
survey lines and included angles between them. The
compass calculates bearings of lines with respect
to magnetic north. The included angles can then be
calculated using suitable formulas in case of
clockwise and anti-clockwise traverse respectively.
For each survey line in the traverse, surveyors take
two bearings that is fore bearing and back bearing
which should exactly differ by 180° if local attraction is
negligible. The name Prismatic compass is given to it
because it essentially consists of a prism which is
used for taking observations more accurately.

In Compass survey chain or tape is used for linear

measurements and compass is used for fixing
direction. The compass freely suspended magnetic
needle directs to north- south and the bearing of line is
obtained by line of sight.

OBJECTIVE :

i. To introduce the equipment used in level

measurement hence execute the fieldwork.
ii. To measure bearings of the traverse by using
prismatic compass survey and do the correction (if
any)
iii.

EQUIPMENT USED

USES OF MATERIALS

Use of Prismatic Compass.

This type of compass, being a very light and simple

instrument, is extensively used for preliminary surveys
of roads, rough traverses, etc., where time and
accuracy is not the deciding factor.

Procedure of Survey on Prismatic

Compass.

1. For taking readings with a prismatic compass, the

same may be held in hand and turned till the ranging
rod on the next station is bisected by the cross hair
when seen through the eye-vane.

2. The instrument should be held as nearly level as can

be judged. If the needle does not oscillate, it means that
it is touching the glass lid and is not being held vertical.

3. It should be held properly, and the brake knob

pressed lightly. Then the reading is taken.

This gives the bearing of the line joining the point

vertically below the compass and the point on which
the Levelling Staff is held.
PROCEDURE

1. COMPASS SET UP HELD IN STATION 1

2. ALL WORK DIRECTION WERE IN CLOCKWISE
3. FORE BEARING WERE OBSERVED AT STATION 1 AND 2
4. THE READING IN COLUMN FORE BEARING ARE RECORDED
5. THE COMPASS ROTATED AND OBSERVED IN LAST STATION
6. THE BEARING RECORDED AND COLUMN BACK BEARING WERE NOTED
7. THE INSTRUMENT WERE TRANSFERED TO STATION 2 AND THE READING
FOR FORE BEARING AND BACK BEARING OBSERVED
8. THE PROCESS REPEATED IN ALL STATION

READINGS
CONCLUSION

Based on the experiment, we learned how to read the bearing

from one point to another point and determine the final
bearing by using suitable method and sketch the traverse. We
aslo learned to use the equipment completely and do the
calculation in the compass survey
