Senior Capstone Practicum Proposal Form 2018-19

Student Name: Cassidy Siordian Period: 2

Topic (a few words): cooking and sharing healthy recipes to inspire people to not eat out so much

Topic in full sentence (identifies the problem): I want to share my cooking experiences and healthy
recipes to inspire people to get into the kitchen and out of drive-thrus. Over 160 million people in
America are overweight or obese, if I can help even a few people replace a dinner at Del Taco with a
healthy, home-cooked meal, I will feel proud.

Description of practicum (What do you see this journey being for you?)

This journey is a commitment to myself that I will eat healthier and not spend so much money and bad
calories eating unhealthy food. I already love cooking and I often spend time cooking for my family but
I usually find myself eating bad too many other times. Not only will this journey help me grow in the
kitchen and explore new food, it will help me become the healthiest version of myself.

**Questions used for Research (Annotated Bibliography):

1. Why does at home cooking have such a negative stigma of being too expensive or too time
consuming and what can be done to inspire others to get into the kitchen and out of drive thrus?

2. Who does obesity most commonly affect?

3. What are some of the leading causes of obesity?

4. What are the differences between cooking at home and eating out?

5. What is already being done to inspire at home cooking?

What information did you learn through your research that you will apply to the practicum? Provide
specific details. TO BE COMPLETED AFTER RESEARCH!

My research taught me that obesity is much more common than many people in America believe.
Obesity causes many health problems and can even be a cause of cancer, which may be preventable if
people stay healthy. Obesity even affects MANY children and their school life can be part of the reason
that children are not aware of healthier choices. Obesity has much to do with our fast food industry and
the lack of availability of fresh produce. Food addiction and the relentlessness of the bad food
industries also cause obesity in many families throughout America. Although bad food and poor
lifestyle choices have a huge role in obesity, genetics always play a part in obesity because some people
are especially susceptible to weight gain. I already knew cooking was a wonderful way to save money,
eat better, and save time but I also became aware that cooking is also a great way to bring your family
together. I loved cooking before but my research proved to me with even more emphasis that cooking is
always the better, more fun, and healthier option.

Learning Goals/Outcomes: What will you understand and/or be able to do as a result of your practicum?

I will work on breaking the stigma that cooking at home is “too expensive” or “too time consuming”. I
will make healthier food choices and rely on the food I have at home instead of resorting to an
unhealthy meal from a fast food restaurant. I will also include ways to make healthier choices when
eating out, when there is no other option.

How will you make a difference in other people’s lives from your journey. What impact do you hope to
have?

Replacing one meal that you’d usually eat out, with a meal that you cooked yourself will already be a
big success because doing that, and having it be successful, will inspire you to want to cook at home
and make healthier choices.

List the steps you will take to complete the practicum and how will you document each and every step
for completing your product (emails, photos, videos, interviews- recorded or transcribed, surveys, phone
call logs, etc...). You may add steps/spaces as needed. A few steps will not do. Think of every possible
step.

What organization (if any) will you work with and for what purpose?

I will not be working with any organizations but maybe I can add my recipes to pinterest with an
extension to my blog.

Learning Stretch: How will this project be a new and meaningful challenge for you?

I spend a lot of time and money eating out with my friends and family so I am hoping to cut that
amount of eating out down significantly.

How will you display your final practicum in your digital portfolio? (Pictures, videos, screencasts, etc…)
Remember that ALL of your evidence must be on your portfolio. An interview must be filmed or have a
transcript. Every picture must have a verbal explanation (screencastify?) Anyone should be able to
access your website and be able to understand every step you took. You saying you did something is
not enough. You must have evidence of every step. Be thorough here!

My blog will document everything that I will be doing on my journey. My portfolio will include my
accounts of my experiences having to do with the making of my blog and my journey but all of
evidence and actual journey will be found by clicking on the link to my blog.
