Currently, there are approximately 3000 CMTs in the United States and several foreign
countries. Certified medical transcriptionists are employed in a variety of work settings,
including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, transcription services, as independent contractors,
and in a number of other healthcare environments. The primary skills necessary for performance
of quality medical transcription are extensive medical knowledge and understanding, sound
judgment, deductive reasoning, and the ability to detect medical inconsistencies in dictation.
