Common Core Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.2.NBT.B.5
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of
operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Computer Science Standard: NA

Objective/Purpose:
Students will be able to demonstrate adding and subtract fluently using place, value,
properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. This is
important to accomplish because once students are familiar with addition and subtraction,
they will be more prepared for the next levels of math, like multiplication and division.

Anticipatory Set:
To excite my students for the lesson, I am going to show them a video on addition that will
lead them into what we are learning. It’s a song that will help prepare them for what we
will be talking about but in a fun way. There also will be another video on subtraction later
in the lesson.
The students will be watching the video in class. They will watch them on their ipads at the
same time, in the beginning of the class.

Model:
I will be demonstrating the skill by using a painting app on my computer to show different
lattice addition and subtraction problems. I will use wevideo to record my voice and the
screen so I can explain the steps to them as I am solving the problems.
Guided Practice:
Students will be given a short worksheet after the lesson to practice doing lattice addition
and subtraction. I will be walking around to help them if they have any questions. They will
hand in their worksheets when they are done and I will look over them to see if they need
more practice on it or if they are ready to move on to harder problems. This will take about
15 minutes. Their is a picture of the worksheet in the slideshow.

Check for Understanding:

I am going to check for understanding by looking over their worksheets that they are going
to hand in. I will also give each student a notecard, asking them to write down if they are
understanding this lesson or if they are struggling or confused about anything from the
lesson.

Closure:
I will close the class by asking if they have any questions about the lesson. I will go over one
or two questions from the worksheet that I saw were difficult for them, but I will have the
students explain to me the steps to solve the problems.
