Owl Design On My Last Dime

So you want to become a seamstress, but you realized that the cost of sewing is uber-pricey. A
side disclaimer, if I were to pay myself the hourly wage of creating a design along with the
purchasing supplies from the fabric store, and sewing it together, it would have been cheaper
just to get an outfit from the store. I believe being a seamstress is a state of mind, it is not about
the spending of money, but the experience of holding something of similar to the power of
magic in your hand that started out as scraps of fabric. Now before you give up on your dreams
of becoming a world class fashion designer, I can give you effiecient ways to reduce your start-up
cost for your sewing business.

Once you get to know me, you will become aware that one of my guilt pleasures is fabric buying.
Like any seamstress worth her stitch, I have accumulated more fabric over the years than I
believe can sew in my lifetime. The possiblities are just endless! However, buying from fabric
stores can become very expensive and for the time and money spent creating the design, it may
have been cheaper and more effiient to purchase something from the store. Or you may be an
extreme novice and you don't want to go all out of pocket before you know how well you can
learn to work your sewing machine.

Here are the top 4 places I like to buy fabric:

Thrift Store

Thrift stores are a great places to find old bedsheets and curtains to start your crafting
endeavors. Although, Salavation Army and other local thrift shops usually have a pretty decent
crafting section. On a good day, you can purchase dozens of bundles of fabric for cheap.
Sometimes they are also fairly large amounts of fabrics not just scrap pieces of fabric.

Retail Stores

Walmart and Hobby Lobby are

Now I am not a big fan of Walmart and Hobby Lobby as it seems like the majority of their fabric
is made for quilters and not more wear as much (unless you are creating a simple cotton dress or
children's clothes. But they do have great notions and basic sewing tools for the beginner
seamstress.

Fabric Store

I know, I know. I just stated that fabric store were expensive but hear me out. Fabric store do
have ocassional sales

Fabric. Com

If you don't live near an fabric store or have local thrift shops in your area, don't fret. You can still
get fabric online! Fabric.com is an online shop that I have been going to for years. They are
always running a sale on their site and they are reasonable priced for the amount of fabric per
yard so they constantly get a percent of my check bi-weekly lol. You can get free shipping if you
spend an minimum of $49 before taxes if you happen to spend under the $49 shipping rate is a
flat $4.99 fee. Depending on what you buy, you can end up with a lot of fabric to creat an entire
outfit or two. :)

Repurposed Fabric

Have you ever outgrew shirt or a pair of jeans you loved? Has your favorite piece of clothing
caught a ugly stain or snagged a hole? Take a look in your closet and instead of throwing it out,
see the potential and give new life to it.

You can remove the embelishments from an old piece of clothing and place it on your creation. It
is also a good way to stockpile on a budget when you are low on cash but in need of a button.
Repurposed design really takes a creative eye, it is a gift that I have yet to truly mastered but in
the past I have done my fair share of revamps!

Now if you really want to creat the exact design you sketch up in your head, you would have to
spend some cash just to acheive the look. Custom fabric pinting is the most pricey per yard. But
if you are just starting out and want to start sewing. These options are a few starter ways to get
the ball going and express your creative side on a budget!
