Shoppers made with stone powder - Sustainability for this generation
and beyond

What is Stone Paper?

It is paper made with lime stone powder, and it has very particular characteristics both in terms of
printing quality and in the durability of the paper itself.

What is the impact on the environment?

This paper does not contain wood or cellulose, and in production we only use natural resins.
Production does not require water or chimical substances. This way we can avoid the pollution and
the waste of electricity needed by the “cooking” and “bleaching” that are part of the production
process for wood-based paper. From one ton of stone powder we obtain one ton of stone paper,
against the 4 tons of wood and 60000 litres of water needed for traditional paper.

Is it resistant? How does printing look on Stone Paper?

Stone Paper shoppers hold 15% more weight compared to those made in Kraft paper. When in
contact with water, Stone Paper shoppers are even more resistant. Stone Paper has a smooth surface,
very pleasant to the touch, it yields brilliant colors in print, has high ink holdout, and high color
saturation and resolution.

How much does it cost?

The price of Stone Paper shoppers is comparable to that of traditional paper shoppers
(not machine made), and much lower than shoppers in synthetic paper like Yugo, Nanya, Polyart.

How is Stone Paper made?

Stone Paper is 80% calcium carbonate, 20% HDPE resin. Calcium carbonate is what is left over
from coal extraction. It is widely used in the construction business and in other applications like
toothpaste as whitening agent. HDPE (High Density Polyethilene) is biodegradable in 12 months.
How can it be recycled?
• To produce stone paper again (and again)
• Together with traditional paper
• If burnt with ordinary garbage, it does not generate any toxic fumes

How many times can it be recycled?

This paper can be recycled over and over again, as opposed to traditional pulp-based paper which
lasts 8 cycles after which the fibers are useless for paper production. After traditional paper is recycled
into Kraft paper or recycled paper, it can only be recycled again as corrugated carton box paper.

Is it true that Stone Paper does not pollute air or water?

Stone Paper does not pollute the air because the process of combining calcium carbonate with HDPE
resin does not generate toxic fumes. It does not pollute water either, simply because it does not use
water in production!. On the other hand, the water used for regular paper production is polluted by
the bleach used for whitening.

Can Stone Paper be used for products other than shopping bags?

Stone Paper is also available in rolls for other applications, just like traditional paper. Compatible
printing technologies include offset lithography, flexography, screen printing, rotogravure, letterpress,
ink jet, and thermal transfer. Just note that Stone Paper is not compatible with heat-fusion laser
printers and copiers without proper coating. Ask for inkjet coating when printing intensive color
graphics and photographs.
