Project Title: How Many Buckets Of Paint do You Actually Need?

Introduction: The objective of this project was to determine the amount of

buckets of paint needed to repaint an exterior wall of a building.

Data Collection:
1. A clinometer app was used to measure the angle of elevation of the two
heights of the wall.
2.The width of the wall was measured using a measuring tape.
3. The distance from the ground to the eye of the experimenter was measured
(eye level height).
4. All observations were recorded on the Data Collection Sheet.

Presentation Data: The table below shows the clinometer reading, the height
(eye level) and distance from wall or each student.

To find the height of the wall the following equation was used: Tan𝜃 =
opposite/adjacent

The height of the wall was equal to the length calculated by the equation + the
Height of the Experimenter.

Length of Left Side of the Wall

Tan(13.4) = x/4.3
0.24 = x/4.3
1.03m = x

Height = Calculated Height + Height of experimenter

= 1.03m + 1.63m
= 2.70m
Length of Right Side of the Wall

Tan(25.8) = x/4.3
0.48m = x/4.3
2.06m = x

Height = Calculated Height + Height of experimenter

= 2.06m + 1.63m
= 3.69m

Area of Wall = Area of triangle + Area of Rectangle

Area of rectangle = LxH

L = 7.3m H = 2.7m
Area = 7.3m x 2.7m

3
Area = 19.71m2

Area of Triangle = (HxB)/2

Area = (0.99m x 7.3m)/ 2
Area = 7.23m2/2
Area = 3.62m2

Area of Wall = 19.71m2 + 3.62m2

Area of Wall = 23.33m2

Number of Buckets of paint needed to repaint wall:

1 gallon of paint can cover up to 37m2

# of buckets of paint needed = Area of wall/ area that can be covered by paint
# of buckets = 23.33m2/ 37m2
# of buckets = 0.63 ≈ 1
# of buckets of paint needed to repaint the wall = 1 gallon (1 bucket)

Analysis of Data:
 The data collected from the experiment showed that the area
of the wall was 23.33m2 .Hence the number of buckets of paint needed to repaint
the wall was 1 gallon of paint(1 bucket).

Discussion of Findings: It was possible to approximate the number of buckets of

paint needed to paint the exterior surface a wall, lack of approximation would
lead to a waste in materials and time.
Hence it is best to calculate the area of surface to be painted, then calculate the
number of buckets of paint needed to paint the wall.
