44 Introduction

This 2019 edition of the Blue Book covers a period of intense change in the UK and the wider
world. By the time you are reading this the exit of the UK from the European Union will be a
few short months away and it is to be hoped that the spectre of a ‘no deal’ situation will have
receded. At time of writing however (in September 2018), the lack of an exit deal has led the
current government to publish a raft of papers describing the future arrangements for any
number of issues including the environment, research, travelling trade and workplace rights that
will come into force should the ‘no deal’ become a reality. However, the power of such an event
per se almost dwindles into nothingness in the face of the wave of uncertainty so generated
which pervades UK business. This, more than anything else, is the miasma that will affect

trading conditions and business perspectives that range from house prices to weekends away in
Europe. Its effect upon business cannot be underestimated. Prepare now.

In the meantime, the purchasing decisions of wavering consumers, be they domestic or
commercial, can be seen to be affecting the construction and engineering sector be that in big
or small business. A key challenge remains the recruitment of good quality staff. Taking a more
strategic approach has reaped dividends for BSRIA as we join the ranks of those employers who

This network was formerly the Operations and Maintenance
Benchmarking Network. In order to help our members to
keep up with current trends in the industry and for the
data collection exercise to meet the needs of the network
members, BSRIA has decided to improve the scope of the
O&M Benchmarking network. Wellbeing is currently an

BSRIA's Residential Network brings together stakeholders
from across the industry responsible for the conception,

The Internet of Things (IoT) means that almost every
device inside and outside of buildings can be given a
degree of ‘intelligence’ and linked in to the internet, and
