204: Innovative Strategies for Language Teaching

Ms. Elenor May Chantal L. Messakaraeng

I. What is the hardest problem you have encountered in terms of language teaching and how
does communicative language teaching respond to this problem?
 The hardest problem I have encountered in terms of language teaching is that my
students are very slow in comprehension. Majority of my students hardly understand
what they are reading especially if it is in English, thus, I have to re-explain my lesson
in the local dialect in order for them to cope up with the lesson. Sometimes I let them
answer in English even if they commit grammatical errors as long as they tried their
best to express their thoughts in English. What matters most is their willingness to
speak in English. That’s why when we are in Literature reading I have to translate and
explain it in their local language or their mother tongue.
2. Active background knowledge
> In order for the students to have background knowledge of the topic, I have to give examples
and explain and interpret it in their own native language. If they have the language fluency but
lack content knowledge, then I have to interpret the topic and give concrete examples so that
they will be familiar with the topic.
3. Use an Open ended prompts or questions when designing an activity or task.
> In order for the students to communicate I will ask open ended questions that they will
answer and interpret so that they will be encourage to communicate with each other. I will give
a paired activity wherein one will ask question and the other partner will answer and alternate.
4. Design prompts that require pair or group of students must rely on and listen to each other.
> I will give my students a paired or group activity. An example of this is through interview
method. One will act as the interviewer and the other will be interviewee. Or it can be also a
panel interview or panel discussion. Given the situation that they have a meeting as a group
discussing something about an upcoming activity in school.
5. Creating questions and prompts that require pairs and groups to collaborate and use the
language to arrive at a product.
