Homework 1

For one of the nine scientists who have received the Award of Excellence in Ecosystem Science,

find and list 5 papers your distinguished ecologist has written. Review the papers written by

your distinguished ecologist and determine if their ecology world-view is in terms of

"Community Ecology" or "Ecosystem Ecology". Provide a paragraph explanation of your

reasoning using in-text citations from the 5 papers you found.

Five Papers/Writings By Dr. Pamela A. Matson:

1. Effects of a diel oxygen cycle on nitrogen transformations and greenhouse gas

emissions in a eutrophied subtropical stream

John A. Harrison, Pamela A. Matson, Scott E. Fendorf. Effects of a diel oxygen cycle on

nitrogen transformations and greenhouse gas emissions in a eutrophied subtropical

stream. Aquatic Sciences. 2005;67(3):308–315.

2. Towards seaport resilience for climate change adaptation: Stakeholder perceptions of

hurricane impacts in Gulfport (MS) and Providence (RI)

seaport resilience for climate change adaptation: Stakeholder perceptions of hurricane

impacts in Gulfport (MS) and Providence (RI). Progress in Planning. 2015;99:1-50.

3. From Global Environmental Change to Sustainability Science: Ecosystem Studies in

the Yaqui Valley, Mexico

Studies in the Yaqui Valley, Mexico. Fundamentals of Ecosystem Science. 2013:

233-241.

4. Planetary Opportunities: A Social Contract for Global Change Science to Contribute to

a Sustainable Future

5. Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology

F. Stuart ChapinIII, Pamela A. Matson, Harold A. Mooney. Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem

Ecology. New York. Springer-Verlag. 2002.

“Community Ecology” or “Ecosystem Ecology”?

Dr. Pamela A. Matson’s ecology world-view is defined in terms of “ecosystem ecology”.

Dr. Matson participated in writing a book with F. Stuart ChapinIII and Harold A. Mooney called,

“Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology” back in 2011 which goes over how the ecosystem

approach explains natures systems in order to best preserve Earth’s climate. In the first chapter

she explains, “The ecosystem approach is fundamental in managing Earth’s resources because it

addresses the interactions that link biotic systems, of which humans are an integral part, with the
physical systems which they depend” (Matson). In another paper written by Dr. Matson with

John A. Harrison and Scott E. Fendorf they tackle the effects of a diel oxygen cycle on nitrogen

transformations and greenhouse gas emissions in the subtropics which is an ecosystem theory

approach on how certain gas cycles interact and effect emission, the interaction between the

environment and natural systems.
