Senior Capstone Practicum Proposal Form 2018-19

Student Name: Hailey Keefer Period: 1st

Topic: (few words): Playing jazz to old people

Topic in full sentence (identifies the problem): I intend to bring entertainment to these elders who do
not usually get entertainment or even visitors

Two-part Thesis Question:

Why does music affect people’s moods?
How can I use music to positively affect these elders?

Description of practicum (What do you see this journey being for you?)

I see this journey being a call back to loving music and bringing joy to others. Maybe if I see how music
can make people happy again, then I will fall back in love. If not, then at least I made these elders day.

**Questions used for Research (Annotated Bibliography): - TO BE COMPLETED AFTER PITCH!

What information did you learn through your research that you will apply to the practicum? Provide
specific details. TO BE COMPLETED AFTER RESEARCH!

Learning Goals/Outcomes: What will you understand and/or be able to do as a result of your
practicum?

I will understand the power that music can have, and the effect it can have on all age groups. No
matter how old you are, you can enjoy a good jazzy tune.

How will you make a difference in other people’s lives from your journey. What impact do you hope to
have?

I will hopefully make a nice positive impact on these people. I hope to bring them joy and be a visitor
for those who do not get them.

List the steps you will take to complete the practicum and how will you document each and every
step for completing your product (emails, photos, videos, interviews- recorded or transcribed, surveys,
phone call logs, etc...). You may add steps/spaces as needed. A few steps will not do. Think of every
possible step.

Step  Evidence

Figure out how many people I need to get together for the jazz group  Notes

Ask the people I need if they are willing to play  List

Find some music to play  The music sheets

Plan some rehearsals and do them   pictures/videos

Practice the music   Pictures/videos

Research a retirement home we can play at

Get our equipment to the retirement home   Pictures

Play for the old people   Video

Pack up and hang out with them for a little while maybe

Repeat the last 3 steps above

What organization (if any) will you work with and for what purpose?

I will be working with a retirement home. I have not found out which one, or ones, we will be playing
at yet

Learning Stretch: How will this project be a new and meaningful challenge for you?

It will be a challenge because I am hoping to rekindle my relationship with music. Also, it will be a
challenge to not cry if an old person is really sweet to me.

How will you display your final practicum in your digital portfolio? (Pictures, videos, screencasts,
etc…) Remember that ALL of your evidence must be on your portfolio. An interview must be filmed
or have a transcript. Every picture must have a verbal explanation (screencastify?) Anyone should be
able to access your website and be able to understand every step you took. You saying you did
something is not enough. You must have evidence of every step. Be thorough here!

I will have a list of everyone playing and what instrument they play, after I ask them if they are going to play.
When I find what music we play I can take pictures of the song titles, because I can’t really show the whole
score. Planning and doing the rehearsals can be documented through group text screen shots and picture and
videos. Researching the home and asking can be documented through call logs and voice recordings of the
calls. Getting our stuff to the retirement home will be a tricky challenge, and can documented through pictures.
When we play, we will take videos of us playing and hopefully interview some old people after words to see
how they liked it. If we hang out with them for a while, I hope to play board games with them.
