PROBLEM WITH CMS
Dense meshe with dense interface region, many DOFs
Efficiency of the Craig-Bampton method decreases
Guyan reduction Ψ = −K−1ii Kib expensive
Many static constraint modes
Many physical DOFs le in reduced model

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION | 5
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Reduced interface model
Craig and Chang, Balmes and others
Need reduction basis to capture deformation at interface
Rigid body modes
Deformation modes
Component interface reduction, fast but many problems
Non-conforming interfaces
Usually poor approximation of interface deformation
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION | 5
ANOTHER (BETTER) SOLUTION
Interface reduction basis from assembled system
Guyan reduction of each substructure (s)
Assemble reduced systems
Eigenvalues from assembled condensed systems
Good approximation of interface deformations
Conforming interfaces
Ψ = −K−1ii Kib expensive to compute
Various version of this method exist

PROPOSED METHOD

PROPOSED METHOD | 6
PROPOSED METHOD
Interface reduction basis from internally coarsened mesh
Keep boundary DOFs fixed
Good approximation of deformation on boundary region
Conforming interfaces
Fast computation of interface reduction basis

PROPOSED METHOD | 6
PROCEDURE
1. Internally coarsen mesh

2. Compute Guyan basis Rc =

I = I
[ Ψc ] [ −K−1ii Kib ]
3. Assemble reduced systems
4. Eigenvectors of assembled reduced system Φb

PROPOSED METHOD | 6
PROCEDURE
Φb
5. Reduce interface of detailed mesh with

6. Compute Guyan basis Rf =

I = I
[ Ψf ] [ −K−1ii Kib Φb ]
7. Compute Craig-Bampton basis T =
Φ b 0
[ Ψf Φi ]
8. Assemble reduced systems and solve

PROPOSED METHOD | 6
PROCEDURE NOTICE
Calculating −Kii Kib is expensive
−1
Solve nb problems with dimension ni
For internally coarse mesh ni smaller, −K−1
ii Kib cheaper
Guyan basis for detailed mesh Ψf = −K−1 ii Kib Φb cheaper
Solve nr problems with dimension ni , with nr < nb

NUMERICAL EXAMPLE | 7
CONCLUSION AND FUTURE WORK
Interface reduction method developed
Assumes mesh coarsening is fast
Good approximation of interface deformation
Faster than normal Craig-Bampton
Looking into if coarsening can be done on system matrices

CONCLUSION | 8
ON THE NUMERICAL EXAMPLE
Interface 378 DOF
Reduced to 22 modes
Substructure 1 (total DOF): 31788 (-378 = 31410)
Substructure 2 (total DOF): 48744 (-378 = 48366)
Reduced to 110 fixed interface modes, respectively
nr < ni+nbb , if ni >> nb small reduction yield improvement
n i n
Best we can do is go from (n3i + n2 nb ) to approach (n3i )
for ns substructures
